PayPal and Other Countries

I'm located in the U.S. and sell things on my web site using a Paypal button. I get payments from some of the bigger English-speaking economies outside of the U.S. quite frequently: Australia, Canada, the U.K. and South Africa.

What I've noticed is that I rarely get payments from the less large English-speaking countries and I'm wondering why? Many of the countries are in Paypal's network, so I'm wondering if it is cumbersome or restrictive to use PayPal in many of these other countries?

If anyone can give me any insight or stories about this, I would appreciate it...

I will make an example with myself, I am from Lesotho, it is the small country that is surrounded by South Africa, we are now able to use paypal because this year we are now able to withdraw funds from our paypal accounts whereas previously we were only allowed to pay so most of us used only debit cards to pay online because only a counted number of people have credit cards and most of the people in my country know nothing about paypal even people who work in banks!!!!!!!

PayPal enabled a lot of those countries over the past several years. I can tell you that I'm getting payments from non-English speaking countries quite often.

So did you translate your site (assuming you have one)? How did you get traffic from Google into those countries?

First things first: Are you getting traffic from these countries? Are the conversion rates similar for those countries as they are for the bigger countries? Bigger countries probably mean more sales, but not necesssarily a different conversion rate.

Also, is your offer attractive to people in those countries (i.e., is it a targetted offer)?

Okay, great q's. I looked at my traffic by country - something I admit I should have already done - and it's really not big enough in those small countries to really get statistical. That leads to a lot of other q's, but that's a different post I guess.

What's int'g is that I did get quite a few hits from mainland China even tho Google is not even in China, so I'm not sure how that happened.

(Yes, the offers should be equally appealing to all cultures and countries as far as I know...)

PayPal used not to be available in many countries, yes now it become available there, but it just started, I don't think people in many countries are familiar with it enough yet, specially as other payment get in these countries earlier like AlertPay or MoneyBooker

AlertPay and MoneyBooker beat Paypal into many countries?? I thought Paypal was more proactive that that - intg...

I've never even heard of those. Are they easy to use and sign up with?

AlertPay looks like it's French. Does anyone know if it's used more heavily in French-speaking countries?
