I am spending a lot of time researching lately because I would like to start one more site. I am a newbie and currently have one niche blog where I am promoting an affiliate product. I think I know the niche I am going to use on my site, but am having a really hard time figuring out what keywords are too competitive????

The bad thing is, I did pretty much no research before starting my first site and it is making me some money. Now I am trying do this site right, but don't really know what exactly that means.

When you check out a competitors site what do you focus on? Pagerank, # of links, history.... any advice is appreciated.

Everyone uses there own criteria, a common factor people use, is a maximum number of competing pages (put your keyword in quotes and type in google, for example no more than 100,000 competing searches).

Personally I would rather take a look at the top 10 results and have a look at PR, domain age, backlink number and quality for them (also I will glance alexa rank to give an idea of traffic).
