I am about two make my second website. The first is a wordpress blog and I am doing ok with it, but I would like to make this new site appear more like a static webpage. I have researched this a bit, but it seems pretty confusing. Would anyone like to explain (to a newbie) how to create this kind of site using wordpress? Thanks!

You could use pages instead of posts and you can make the front page a static page by going to Settings > General > Reading and selecting one of your pages to be the front page.

Out of interest why do you want to make it a static style?

I keep reading that a static looking site is better. I guess I just thought I would give it a try and learn something new along the way. Is this a bad idea?

        Yes. it's a dumb idea.

Why use wordpress at all if you are just going to have a static site?

Just get an HTML template and use that. No need for a database.

Who told you static sites are better? Not sure where you read that from...

It's proven that dynamic websites are better for SEO, for usability, for user-friendliness, and they look better too.

I started off with a static standard html site. Later I added blogs and forums behind the index page. Nothing wrong with using a standard wysiwyg editor. There's a few free ones out there such as Open Office of Komposer.

One good reason to use Wordpress (or any CMS for that matter) for publishing a static site is that it makes it very easy to change the look of the site in the future. It's easy to just drop in a different them when the need arises.

Also, I find content to be a lot easier to manage when it's separated from layout and stored in a database as opposed to storing it in the filesystem.

          Citation needed.

Also, many Warrior's Wordpress sites (take a look at some sig links) , or at least large portions of those sites, essentially function as static sites. That is, they don't have content that changes often with regard to time, conditions, or user interaction.

Just out of curiosity, who prove that?

All of the above have nothing to do with dynamic or static sites. You can optimize a static website for search engines and make it usable and user-friendly just like any dynamic website or even better.

If you're not going to update your site very often, make it static. And don't worry - Google won't punish you for that!

Yes you can opt to have a static page as AnilK states above however if you are thinking of using Wordpress as a salespage then it is worthwhile to find a good theme designer or coder.

You will not have a "static" site... just a site powered by WP that looks like a static site

It's all done by settings and theme customization. (Of course, everybody and their dog has a different idea how a static site should look like...)

Nothing wrong with trying different themes and different layouts. Some themes contain their own theme options which you can find under Appearance. And depending on the theme, look for different templates under the Page Attributes in the right sidebar when editing a page. For example, one of the themes I use offers a "full width" template. And Twenty Eleven theme offers the Showcase and Sidebar templates in addition to Theme options where you can change the column layout. Plus you can disable comments on a page to give it a more "non-blog" appearance. Experiment until you get the look you like.

You could just make the site and then never update it

that would pretty much do the trick...
