How do people keep making money on "make money NOW" sites?

An honest question, but maybe more philosophical than detail-oriented.

I'm not really in the affiliate game at the moment, more of a bystander working out where to start and how to cram it into my life. Non-credentials aside, I recently stumbled onto cbengine, took a look at Clickbank's highest-gravity products, and... holy crap, how is every single one of these about making money or dating?

The best advice I keep hearing over and over again is to find a niche and market the hell out of it. But "make money online" isn't exactly undiscovered territory. How are hundreds of people still making money on this? All the good keywords are SEO'd into oblivion; all the ads' CPCs are through the roof. Even if you assume a small subset of people have been swapping gigantic lists since 1999, wouldn't there be, say, less than ten of them by now, like media companies? So how the heck does a new "guru" show up every ten minutes and get his share of the money?

Making your own products. Building your own list. JVing with other creators and their lists.

The money is all in the list. Or so I hear.

There are many ways to reach people, lists, social promotion, using alternative keywords, you can still get cheap clicks for a money making product, although Google Adwords may ban you for advertising a "get rich quick scheme".

People still make money on IM because of the exact reason you asked the question. You want to make money online. Pretty much a big circle of people selling to each other it seems like. Just make your own product and build an email list...and boom, you made money in a high competition niche!
