How Can I Track Which Article/Article Source Gave Me The Opt-in or Sale?

I've never really tracked which article or article source such as articlesbase or ezinearticles gave me the opt-ins to my squeeze page. I always called it good knowing that I was getting a 50% opt-in rate.

Now I realize I could better use my resources if I find out which articles are getting the most opt-ins and which directories are the best for submission.

I would like to know how to set this up and which type of tracking software you recommend. Thanks.

I would suggest using a service like bitly to create shortened urls. if you get a free account, they will track the number of clicks you get on a link. You could also place google analytics on your opt-in page to track where visitors are coming from when they enter your site.

If you are just using those two article sites you could always set up two different pages on your web site with the exact same info on the page.

Send all your ezine article traffic to yoursite/ezpage

And your articlesbase traffic to yoursite/abpage

I always used aweber and whatever link I put in the article I just added tracking to the end of the url and it would show up on my aweber notification for that lead.

    Example

    mysite{dot}com/?t=ezdogarticle

The problem you face in this is that if you set up tracking code on the article, you lose the benefit of inbound links for the search engines.

The best way in my mind is to load some kind of software on your server that tracks the source of the incoming traffic, cookies the visitor, and connects the cookie to the completed action.

LOL Nice in theory I know... Now you have to find software to do that for you... I don't know what to recommend at this time.

What I do is ask my customers. LOL! Just add a drop-down field in the autoresponder and order forms asking how they found your article/website. The raw traffic data available through cPanel should also be part of your tracking. Some may use Google Analytics, but me and Google just don't get along.
