Direct linking or Landers?

Hello fellow warriors!

I'm looking to start testing some ppc campaigns but I'm having doubts on how I want to start. My main concern is if I should dive in with direct linking and get my hands dirty or if I should get a landing page up and start testing from there. I'm new to ppc and I'm just looking to hear how some of you started and what you've had the most success with from the start.

There's a PPC forum full of information about this. Here's a thread that you can find helpful:

Anyway, probably this thread will be moved to that forum soon.

what are you meaning when you say 'direct linking'??

I've recently started IM to and I am making sure that I am sending people to capture or sales pages, since landing pages are only good for SEO and you are using PPC (so there is no need for landing pages) - In other words my capture or sales pages are focused on getting the visitor to input their details because I'm trying to start building a list.

    TIP
Remember Landing pages are differant to sales and capture pages, Landing pages are for getting high on search engines and capture pages and sales pages are for getting your products shifted in return for email addresses

I've done only a little PPC.

However, I've done a lot of conversion-rate testing and I'd say, pretty firmly, that you should get a landing page up and start testing from there.

The reality is that the things that convert a little bit on direct linking may not convert much better with a landing page, whereas some of the things that don't convert at all on direct linking may convert really well with a landing page.

It's easy to imagine that you're learning something by testing direct linking, and to assume that what converts a little bit on direct linking will be worth building a landing page for, and that anything else won't be, but the reality typically belies this theory.

Besides which, some PPC set-ups don't even allow direct linking ...

    Sorry, but this is nonsense.

A landing page can be a sales page or a lead-capture page.

The term "landing page" means simply the page on which you arrange for your traffic to land - it can be any sort of page you like.

And you're offering people "TIPS" here - why ...

Thanks for the link Alfredo, I searched through a few ppc threads but didn't come across that one.

I'm going to invest in a lander and start testing from there. I wanted to dive in and get my hands dirty on direct linking but I'm convinced I'll get a better turnout with a lander. Might take me a little longer to get my niche across the page but I'd rather do it the most efficient way.

      Thanks for the input Alexa

That was my understanding of it.

You more or less have to, really: it would be a "bizarre anomaly" if you don't.

I'm sure this is right, in principle.
