Help in list building

Hey warriors,

I have been trying to come up with a strategy on how to build list specific to college and university students.

I am looking for different ways to drive traffic to my squeeze page.

Would Facebook be a viable option or I have also found some people selling email lists of students? Besides these, what else do you think I could do to drive traffic, specifically students to my squeeze page?

Thank you in advance.

don't buy email list, you will be considered as a spammer, build your list one by one..

facebook ads, PPC and PPV are good options

Find out something that would be really valuable to them and give it away (information hopefully) in exchange for an optin. I know it sound cliche but it works…. I would imagine it would be specially effective with college students on a tight budget….

Find out where these students hang out and go there.

Look in forums that they hang out in.
Place your squeeze page link on blogs that are targeted towards students by posting helpful comments, or writing an article, doing a guest post etc.

Facebook should be a good place to start, set up a fan page and offer something of value like Gregg said and take it from there.

Maybe you already have the answers... although it wasn't obvious from your OP.

So, the real questions (from here) would be:
WHY do you want to build this list?
WHAT do you want to do with this list?
What will you promote to this list?

If you know the answers... the strategy should be defined by those answers: where to find them; how to approach them; what kind of "bribe" to offer them to subscribe etc.

Exactly!!! By knowing WHY you want to build the list, What will you promote, and WHAT do you want to do with it; you can easily CONNECT with your viewers. Knowing the things you want to do with your list allows you to know the BEST APPROACH in dealing with them, in dealing with their needs. And eventually, it will turn viewers into potential customers!

You can get better, faster easier results - if you think about it differently.

Let me put it to you this way...

Imagine you're going fishing. You have your rod and you have a hook.

Now what do you need next?

    Bait!

The moral of the story is that people always assume "traffic" is the problem - it isn't so.

If you have a good enough bait, you'll attract subscribers like bees to honey or flies to.....you get the idea.

My suggestion is that you come up with a REALLY GOOD lead magnet.

Then either sell that magnet for 100% of the profits or give it away.

The advantage of selling it is that you are going to build a much better list.

People assume that just having a big list is the key to passive income, their problems solved...

WELL IF IT WERE A CASE OF A BIG LIST - WOULDN'T SPAMMER BE THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD?!

I would look at the kind of lead magnet (some call it "freebie" some call it "eithical bribe") you have.

The better it is, the less work you'll have to do.

The money you make from your list is a result of 2 things (an notice I am not mentioning LIST SIZE).

    1. The traffic source (the quality of the traffic)
    2. The reason why they opted in (the ethical bribe)

Now if you are skeptical, here's proof of how I became one
of awebers fastest growing accounts (that was over a year
ago, things are bigger than this now...):

    You see that, don't you?

If I can do it with these simple strategies, anyone can!!

What niche are you targetting specifically? You could always sign up with a CPA network and get affiliates to promote your squeeze landing page. Pay $ 2.10 per lead and you will get some pretty good results..

One thing I would recommend is to consider marketing directly on campus with fliers. I don't know if you are targeting a specific region or just students across the globe in general, but I've seen offline marketing work pretty decently for its price (hire local college students). It can be fliers, announcements made at an event etc.

Wow, appreciate the input guys! Offline tactics are something that I have already planned once school gets rolling again in September.

I can't really reveal why I am building this list because that will give the whole idea away.

@isoftware, awesome feedback, I really appreciate it!

    Hi Osman,

I don't know if you have a niche within the student market, but if you do, a strategy that has worked for me in the past is directly targeting the president of a university social society within our niche, with a free offer for society members (in our case free tickets to what was otherwise a paid event).

Some awesome ideas for traffic generation here!

Also remember that Facebook doesn't have to just consist of paid ppc. Why not look at setting up Facebook pages for some of the universities you want to target? If you give people a reason to spend time on them then they will.

These are great traffic generation methods, I would recommend creating college pages as well, by class, depending on which class you want to focus on. Or to just organize it. A lot of people join the college class pages but be careful how you market to them though because FB is always watching.

      Agree with everyones posts.

College students are smart and savvy and they know whats up.

You definitely need something valuable to provide them - there's no point to hook them with a chance to win an ipod and then send them other unrelated offers.

Think about how you will monetize your list and how valuable you can be for them.

Also you need a high converting squeeze page
