Can you remember when you were a child?

For some it's not as long as for others but for me it wasn't too long after the Ark went into dry dock!

Do you remember when you first started learning to read, write and draw patterns round the edge of each page? If you were still drawing patterns when you were in secondary school I hope you got some help :-)

Don't switch off yet, there is a point to this.

I was thinking today about how difficult some tasks are compared to others when it comes to IM. Reading and writing comes naturally and I do it without thinking. However, when it comes to HTML, anchor tect and suchlike it's a completely different matter.

It took me a lot of practice to get my anchor text right. Some links I still have problems with though and it's time consuming to fix them.

That's what got me thinking about this whole reading and writing malarky.

Starting to learn HTML was like reading and writing a whole new language and for me anyway, it didn't come easily. I could read HTML for the pure basics of what I needed such as how to view the source code and change it to insert an image on my own computer. That was about my limit.

Writing it was a bit more difficult and much more slower. A basic link I could do but when it came to anchor text that was much harder for me unless I got into the practice of doing a bit every day.

I still learn HTML on a need to know basis and therefore don't spend hours and days learning it all - life's too short.

The patterns round the edge of a page were something else. We did them because we were told to do them. We thought it was just for fun and the make the page look 'nice'.

Little did I know it was to practice the shape of the letters remember doing uuuuuuuuuu or wwwwwww all round the page or even ^^^^^^^^^ and <><>><><><><>><><><><?

So how does this fit in with IM?

The internet and life itself nowadays is all speed and getting things done instantly. We forget to have patience at times and we want to see results immediately. Well, life just isn't like that! Not all the time anyway.

Sometimes we have to learn things at a snails pace then practice and practice more until we master the skill. Then it becomes second nature.

The patterns are what the gurus or 'experts tell us. They know what good for us (most of the time) for the way we should approach our business to make it successful. How often do we do that when we start out and prefer to cut corners to save time, thinking we know better 0 only to fall flat on our face and have to do it in the end anyway?

So when you are starting our or struggling to learn something new instead of thinking Why can't I earn as much, be successful as, or as good as somebody else - remeber they had to learn it all too at some time and were probably no different from any of us.

What are your thoughts?

I think we could also compare it to riding a bike.

Some people just hop on the bike and off they go.

Some people need that first push.

Still others need someone to hold onto the seat and run alongside them and/or they need training wheels for a while.

We're going to fall down at some point... pretty much guaranteed.

Those who climb back on the bike of IM will do just fine. They get a little better each time they climb back on, until pretty soon they're sailing down hills yelling, "look ma, no hands!"

Those who fall down and scream, "This bike is a scam! No one can learn to ride a bike! The bike gurus just want my money!" ...well, probably won't do have much success in IM.

    cheers,
    Becky
