Some marketing advice on a new beer company

Hi, I just built a website for a beer company. Right now the beer is available locally and will be in other states in the coming months.

I don't think SEO and PPC is ideal for this type of product since you can't sell beer online. I'm kind of stuck here. Perhaps putting the website url on the beer and then offering coupons if they sign up for a newsletter?

Any help would be appreciated.

Defenitly need commercials with clydesdales and singing frogs... oh wait.

You likely wont have many people that are interested in a website for the beer company (if its only local beer). But there are some things you can try! Think about special promotions from the website; perhaps codes inside the beer bottle cap to redeem prizes. Local commercials with a link to the site will likely also drive traffic. Talk with the local bars/clubs about promoting the beer/website with flyers and special deals.

Edit: Look into local viral marketing. This could be effective for your campaign. Take a look at what other sites not just beer companies have done in the past. Videos, Pictures, etc..

Well you can still advertise the brand for them. You are heading along the right track perhaps advertise the brand and have it obvious that they can only ship to "x" locations something along those lines atm. It is tough perhaps research other beer companies see what they do.

Man, I have been doing dry July, so really looking forward to my first drink tonight!

Anyway, I think this is really something for a Facebook group.

IMO your average beer drinker would more likely visit:

    facebook(dot)com/localbeer

    rather than:

    unknownwebsite(dot)com

I bet you would have MORE subscribers through a Facebook channel than a private website.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Your success with the website depends on the quality of the beer that is my opinion.

Great ideas. Perhaps I should set up a mailing list on facebook. The people that sign up then can get periodic discounts. The facebook page is already up with almost 900 "likes". This is what the website looks like. buffalobillcodybeer.com

Want to know how some of the greatest beer companies came into the spotlight?

They showed the STORY of the beer... from where it was harvested, the process used to make it, and package it. You'll be surprised to learn that the singing frog crap actually reduced the sales of that companies market share by about 2%.

    Why?

Because they weren't relating it to the prospect.. they were trying to be "cute" with their advertising and it cost them BIG TIME.

I know it's only a local beer, but studying up on the people behind the big fish in the industry might go a long way.

I don't know how much budget you have but I've seen some companies "sponsor" parties in colleges which work pretty well for them. You MUST make sure that there are no underage students which goes without saying.

LOL sounds great but probably best to stay away from colleges. One bad apple is all it takes.

Here is what you need to do (even though I know you won't do it)

You need to start creating a buyers list. Since it is a new product, and it seems you're not on a huge budget, direct mail is your best shot.

Does anybody else do it? No!

    Will it work! Probably.

    How?

    Well, here are some ideas:

-create a special membership program. Your buyers will mostly be men, so they can get a monthly T-shirt with a cool crazy slogan, and a case of beer every month. For people who drink a lot, you can create higher membership levels, with beer delivered to their homes.

Because you are supplying them directly, chances are you could sell cheaper that they would get it at the bar, but make more profit.

If you create an image that's exclusive enough, you will make a bit of money there, on regular basis.

    - Organize an event, have sexy women serving beer etc. Use direct mail to drive people to come

    - You can even try pre-paid beer cards in selected local bars!

    - Have a newsletter -get guys to write in about the crazy s*!t they did when they drunk the beer.

    - Stuff like that can generate publicity to increase interest.

    - WHATEVER YOU DO, don't do what the other beer companies are doing - you will just get drowned in the sea of, well, beer.

Really, you couldn't set up a shopping cart for them where people order beer online and get it shipped to their house?

I am pretty sure you could order beer online and get it shipped to your address. Don't a lot of specialty brewers who don't have a national presence do this for their hardcore fans who can't always make it back to the location of the brewery?

    I would think so, surely.

  • webmarketingguy,

I think the only plausible way I can help you help the beer company is if you send me a couple of cases of their product.

Then I will let you know what I think.

The absolute best advice I can give you is to read everything you can about P.T. Barnum! There is a great book about him (There's a customer born every minute) that was written by Joe Vitale, I picked it up from the library two years ago....great book!

When you learn about P.T. Barnum, you begin to think of marketing in an entirely different way. You'll get so many out-of-the-box ideas for your beer company, I promise!

I find the book really interesting to read but unfortunately I can't find any copy of that book in any bookstore in our town.

You can get it on Amazon along with several other books about him. Do a search for P.T. Barnum in the book section of Amazon.

LOL wish I could. It's illegal to ship beer. The site is going to be used to sell merchandise.

The web design guy is in charge of marketing for a new beer brand that is expected to go national? Not bloody likely.

Any halfway serious endeavor would have a professional brand marketer on board, not some guy who keeps posting the URL in hopes we'll look. And he'd have a fairly hefty budget to work with.

The beer is already available in 2 states. Colorado will be getting it in the fall. There is money behind it. The owner was a Turner Executive (Eric Bischoff). You can look him up. There are other things in place. I was just looking for advice. Thanks though.
