Hosting problems... recommendations?

Let me know if there's a more appropriate sub-forum for posting this. I don't see one that really applies.

Every day at around 7am (California time, where my host is based) my website starts showing all kinds of problems. The page won't load, I can't access my email, etc. This lasts for at least one hour and sometimes longer, almost every day.

I'm on the other side of the ocean and for a long time I thought it was mostly local traffic problems on my end. (That's what my host claimed!).

But recently I've been checking up using DNS tools and I see that it's not just me. After presenting the evidence to my host, now they say it's due to "shared server traffic". They say I need a dedicated server to avoid this.

I guess their 99.9% uptime guarantee doesn't apply to "shared server traffic"! Is this normal with shared server hosting? Do I really need a dedicated server or are they giving me the run-around?

I've already decided to get a new host... I just don't want to run into the same problem with a shared server if this is true. Thanks for any suggestions!

I've never experienced that before with shared hosting. I've been with 4 different web hosts.

I'd personally recommend Zoot host. They run lots of high traffic servers and its owned by an Internet Marketer who understands our needs. No need to worry about randomly getting shut down for some stupid reason.

    Hi,

Sometimes with shared hosts there are some people that abuse the CPU resources. Just one thing to do would be simply to ask them to put you to a different shared server, one that doesn't have as high a load in the morning and that would resolve your problem. It should only take them about 5 to 10 minutes to do. Alternatively, you could simply find a different web host, or take their suggestion and get a dedicated server

I've been using Kiosk.ws for a few years now and been very, no scratch that... Extremely happy with them.

Now that there move from Canada is complete their servers are much faster and more reliable.

All I can say is that I have used Godaddy and have been 99.9% happy with their hosting. I have heard wonderful things about hostgator as well. Good Luck my friend!

Since its always at the same time of day every day, I wonder if you or your host has a backup system working at that time.
There are many things that can effect the resources of the server and since its always at the same time, I think they and/or you have something automatically running that drains the system for that duration.

No. It shouldn't be slow even on shared hosting. How long it be slow every night?

No. if your site is a regular simple web site without any forums installed, your shared hosting should withstand a reasonable amount of traffic. Still if you want to go for a dedicated server, I really don't advice dedicated server. Instead, go with a VPS. VPSes are cheap and technical stuff will be dealt by your host. On the other hand, dedicated server needs a system admin which costs you $30 - $75/month extra apart from dedicated server hosting.

      Hi Dave

Was just looking at this thread and thought you were going through some strange occurrances.

Firstly are you sure that it's your host that's causing the problems - it could be your dsl supplier.

I was on holidays before Christmas and thought I was having the same problem only to find out that the provider (BT) was only allowing 13k bps transfer rate compared to my normal 50K +

From what I understand the morning is the 'peak time' for bandwidth usage' so it could be your supplier.

However, if not, I agree with some of the comments of the other guys hostgator has always stood up well with me - I've never had a problem.

However I can't say the same for Godaddy. I had taken out a virtual dedicated server with them because I needed the extra cpu power for a video product only to find out they couldn't accommodate ioncube (encryption coding) and wasted nearly two weeks trying to get it sorted.

I then went to and got a UK dedicated server and if you get the right hosting company - you don't have to pay $30 to $70 per month on top.

What I'm saying is if you really want to do things right go for a dedicated server (it can be a steep learning curve) but the independence and reliability is well worth it.

But seriously get you DSL checked out first before you change hosts and then go dedicated!!

      Regards

      Peter
