Is my site too slow, if so why ?

My Wordpress site was recently giving me a database error and not loading properly, I have quite a few pictures, which are smooshed. The site is going through cloudflare free service, which i think is supposed to speed it up.

I contacted my host who told me "The limit on usage for your account is currently 1/10th of an entire server, and it appears to be routinely running up against this limit."

Since then I have deleted some old plugins,(i now have 44 installed and 33 activated) added caching plugins, and deleted revisions of posts etc.

my host offered me a vps or turbo plan but that sounds too expensive.

It varies as to time of day and my own connection, Can anyone suggest the best way to speed it up ?

I ran yslow and it suggested using sprites which looks pretty complicated.

I have scripts that load twitter, facebook and a youtube video, I have installed something that is supposed to aggregate these to speed it up, but not sure how to tell if its working.
I also have a contactme form loading as a widget (not really how its supposed to be used but i prefer it to having to hit a contact button)

do i have too many pictures ?
too many plugins ?
too many scripts ?
or something else ?

ps i was hoping to install a revolving gallery plugin for 3 images that are already used to use as a widget , will that make the situation worse ?

I googled it and it seems quite a common wordpress problem, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try installing this Wordpress plugin : W3 Total Cache. It makes you pages load faster and it requires much less CPU processing than using wordpress al by itself.Hope this helps.

I believe there is a handy little service on Fiverr which may be of use in your situation. I'm not quite sure, but this might help you. Now that you mention it, perhaps I should streamline my blogs a bit.

44 plugins, with 33 activated, is a lot. If any of those plugins focus on the same area (you mentioned adding caching plugins - plural) cut it down to 1 per area you want to improve.

Remove the 11 plugins that are deactivated - delete them.

Make sure your images are all optimised - there's a useful tool here:

Online Image Optimizer: Optimize your GIFS, JPGS, and PNGS online.

W3-Total-Cache is good, but takes some setting up. Here's how I've set up my copy:

If you have 'heavy' items (for example running scripts) on your page place them over to the right (in a sidebar) and low down. More details here:

Try those suggestions and see how you go,

    Cheers,

-You have way too many plugins. 44 is way too much, and I've generally seen having only 6-12 in total (each plugin will create a call to another service, which only slows down your site).

-You should run a database optimization program (since you mentioned CloudFlare, there is one available in the CloudFlare WordPress plugin).

-If you have multiple social widgets (social bookmarking, sharing), try finding one that will work well that supports the key social networks/sharing services.

All good advice, and it can all be summed down into a few words...de-clutter your website and get rid of what is not necessary

You should probably only need 10 plug-ins at maximum, not that many dormant and unused :p
