Why They Called It Panda?

Just curious why Google called it Panda Updates?

Are they trying to link it with Panada Bears found in China?

Just asking

"Panda" is the nickname of the Google engineer in charge of that notable update, from what I understand.

I guess the nickname thing was probably why; but I like to believe its because like Panda's, crappy marketers and their low quality sites are now endangered.

I have another question: Why do some people refer to it as the Farmer update?

Farmers basically pluck out the weeds for quality crops to grow.

Maybe somehow it could be based on that I suppose.

The reason that it was originally referred to as the "Farmer" update was because it mainly targeted what at the time were predominantly called "content farms."

Essentially sites with thousands (millions?) of pages of loosely targeted content with the idea of profiting from advertising and affiliate marketing.

I believe it was Demand Studios (?) was even going to do an IPO on that very business model and within a few weeks Farmer had appeared.

It is now referred to as the Panda update after Google confirmed it was named after an internal engineer.
