I came across the following tip regarding title tags:

Title tags should be less than 65 characters and avoid using stop words such as: a, if, the, then, and, an, to, etc. Your title tag should also be limited to the use of alphanumeric characters, hyphens, and commas.

What are the consequences if my web pages violate this?

Is there any tool that can tell me the pages that are violating this rule?

Thanks.

I don't believe it's a hard and fast rule, more of a guideline and in part a guess as to what the search engines like. I also understand you should have the topic containing the keywords at the front and the site name at the end of the title. Another fundamental, make each page's title different and tailored for the page.

Ive seen utility tools that examine the meta tags, etc of a page for good practices, sort I can't find them now, Google webmaster tools may have something.

I think people get too carried away with optimizing title for search, and actually forget to optimize titles for higher clickthroughs too. It's no use having your page rank first, if all the users are visiting the second or third result because of a more intriguing title.
