What is this spammer trying to accomplish?

Are you getting these on your blogs today, too?

There's no useful URL, no keyworded links... The only thing these spam comments have in common is one spectacularly misspelled word each.

Any idea why?

This is a Spammer in training. The misspelled word is likely to be a sort of tracking identifyer.

I see what you did there.

      It is very odd, though.

    Hi,

That will be the first set to check out your server.

The next set will be with malicious codes or spam URLs.

I'd be using Akismet Plugin to stay safe.

    • azmanar, I think you're probably right that it's the first wave.

I don't use akismet because I like to see what's coming in and hopefully learn something from it.

I get these all the time. The Akismet plugin does not seem so effective as when it first came out..They cannot seem to filter these spam comments anymore..

Well... I won't need Akismet if the spam level is so low.
Many got blocked and a tiny number just passed the filter.
        Saves me time.

Just be aware that some of the innocent spam links may contain mischievous codes that we don't want to click. They could be click counters to see CTR thus analyzing our behaviours. They could contain malicious codes to take over our PC.

Or they are just measuring us up for something we don't know, like returning notices to the originator. Maybe just to see our reactions in approving them before taking the next steps.

As you can see from Fluff's spam examples, there is a pattern:

        1. All are purposely written with spelling mistakes.
        2. All the IPs are different
        3. All have different email addresses
        4. All having the same dates
        5. All sent in a span of 2 hours
        6. All are short 1-liners
        7. All have seemingly innocent URLs

Now, who sent them from different IP addresses. I bet it is the same person. He did his research and selected his targets. It is not random. Used spam bots from other people's PC, unknown to owners.

        Spammers are cunning and deceptive.

Be aware of the recent spates of :
        - Malware taking over PCs
        - Browser re-direction caused by Browser Plugins and Add-ons.
        - WP & CPanel being hacked or hijacked.

For all we know, other people might also be seeing our "SPAM COMMENTS" with our credentials that we didn't send.

I'm not trying to alarm anyone with my speculations. Just be aware and take steps to secure our PCs and WP sites as soon as possible.

Yep I get those too... I'm also curious what good are those...

    IMO these are either:
    1. tests of various software
    2. tests of spammers to see if you approve comments or autoapprove...

Yeah, they are trying to either test their spamming software or they are trying to test whether you approve their comments (or autoapprove) so they can blast your blog if you do.

    here is what he does.

    Step 1
Spam the internet with a misspelled word and a comment that no one will approve or only someone who can't identify spam will approve. That comment must have something unique so it can be traced later on.

    Step 2
Grab the list of urls that have that tracer (in this case a misspelled word) by using scrapebox to scrape Google. A simple keyword string search like "panielss" will give you a list of all the autoapprove blogs and all the amateur bloggers who will accept any comments on their blog

    Step 3

Spam your website to the new list of urls which contain only autoapprove blogs and amateur bloggers. This way you stay safe from Akismet blacklist.

I used to get these EVERY day...

Akismet will eliminate ALL comments that are left that are spam..

Click it to go to the plugin download site. ==> ASKISMET.

    P.S. It's a free wordpress plugin!

P.P.S. You can even look back at the spam comments that it caught! (In case you want to learn from it!)

Hope that helps get rid of those spammy, junk comments!

    • Josh, akismet isn't free now if your blog is monetized. I was quoted $5/month.

        fLufF,

You just got to move the scroll bar to $0. (It worked for me)

I had the same thing going on in my blog, accept in one week I got hit with 219 of them. When I shopped for answers, I was told it was a spammers way of creating 'backlinks' to a site they were trying to rank quickly, but I dunno.

I was also told they didn't care if the comments ever saw the light of day (or a moderators approval) as the spammers just wanted the bots and crawlers to snag the link back to their intended site.

Since I now moderate and use Askimet...problems stopped immediately.

Still would like to understand why exert such effort to spam, when proper SEO seems easier

        All the Best,

        Art

EDIT: Hmmmm just realized you mentioned there was no URL or keywords in your spam...odd, perhaps my above mention is obsolete in this case.

They're just doing some initial spamming before they filter out the blogs that will accept them for various reasons. I personally enjoy deleting every notification I get on my email while laughing at them. I wonder if it'll do anything if I made the worst site ever and accepted backlinks to all these spammers.

I got a lot of those too and i was confused too.. but then the other wave of spams came and it was with a lot of links and html codes in the comment. Like viagra offers and stuff. I don't use akismet so i can see whats out there and try to learn something from it. But im thinking of using akismet again.

I think all of us got those annoying spams. If these were just the first wave, and what could we expect on the second or the next wave? Can we try to deny all these spams coming and do we have software to detect spammers and their spams? Just curious.
