How long does it take you to get an affiliate site up and running profitably?

I'm interested to know how long does it take you to build a site and make it profitable from start to finish? From keyword research and domain selection right through to profit?

I'd actually like to know if its a primarily Clickbank site, how long does it take you to make it to your first sale?

If it is primarily an adsense site, how long until you're at something like $5 a day?

If its a primarily an Amazon site, how long from keyword research and domain purchase to daily sales?

I'm having a tough time of it getting my sites up and running profitably and just wondered what my efforts and extremely long time line look like compared to others. The keyword research and domain selection part is simple enough, but I really lag on getting content/articles/posts and then the backlinking.

More ideas come to me for more sites and I just keep doing keyword research and domain buying. I know those who earn more probably outsource most of the work, but I want to hear from those still doing it themselves, or from those who used to do it themselves.

It takes as long as it takes. There's no "answer" to that question. and if you're not willing to put work into the backlinking and other offpage factors then you're just kidding yourself.

It really depends. Sometimes it's a few hours and they just make money; sometimes it's weeks.

I know it can be irritating to receive the 'how long is a peice of string' answers but that really is the case. There are too many factors involved to give a timeframe, it all depends on how you go about things, your niche, your target audience and so on.

The only advice I can give you is to try to focus on one, or just a few projects to start with. If you aren't getting all the work that goes into getting content and backlinking done, and aren't yet able to outsource it, then you're going to find it difficult if not impossible to get off the ground. At least by focusing you are keeping the tedius bits to a minimum...

Find something that works for you, then expand (and eventually outsource.)

      Best of luck!

It all depends on how fast you discover a good keyword and assess the strength of your competition during the research process. So for some, it may take days just to figure out what keyword you want to go for. The fastest time I took from research to first sale I think was 2-3 days. But most of the time it takes about a week or two since you want to target things that have more traffic and thus more competition to deal with.

It depends on the quality of your content as well as your link building efforts.

I don't think you can really put a number out there like that....

It depends on a TON of things:

      -where traffic is coming from
      -how much traffic you're getting
      -competition
-desperation of the visitors (WoW players aren't desperate- people trying to win back their spouses are)
      -your pre-sell page
-if you're building a relationship with a list made from that site
      -etc.

So to be honest, its hard to say how long is average.

I realize there are many determining factors like niche, traffic and quality. I guess I was thinking more about an 'average'. If you typically build quite a few sites, 10 for example, would you think it takes you on average a week, or two, or more to get them really working for you.

I was just trying to gauge this, but I see now that was pretty futile.

    Thanks for your answers though.

Yes... I agree with "It all depends"

    Your choice of Market/Niche

Then the quality of the following:

    Backlinks
    Traffic driving
    Article writing
    Video

and how hard your willing to go at it!

Agree with the above - it all depends on so many things. Getting a site or a blog up and running can be done in a few minutes.

Getting traffic to it is the harder part. I've used SEO techniques in the past and have websites that I haven't touched for literally years that have visitors coming to them every day, but it was weeks before I first saw the first lot of traffic 'naturally' arriving via searches.

If you have a big twitter following or something like that you can send people to your website.

If you have a compelling offer and an affiliate program you can get affiliates to promote for you

Or you could shortcut and get traffic using PPC

But the last of these costs money. And you need to be clear how you are going to get that money back. Cheap PPC methods do exist if you need to build your traffic quickly.

Make sure you list build while you do whatever it is you do though so you can go back to those visitors time and again. Otherwise you just have to start from fresh every day to get your next lot of traffic.

hmm.. it depends on how fast you can set up your business model and system.

    "all on you."

for profits - if you can set up a complete system in 1 day and launch a paid advertising campaign and then converting those laser targeted leads into paid traffic you could make money in less then 48 hours

you can do this with affiliate marketing or CPA marketing.. it all depends on you

As everyone else is stating, its really different for everyone and for every site, i have students that report there first sale within a few days of completing a site, to some that have yet to get a sale yet.
The key is to keep at it, and do whats needed to reach that goal and I find that is where most people fail because they have the mentality of, build it and they will come.

You actually have to let them know you are there, and then they will come, so backlinking SEO Article writing blog commenting etc each offering them a path to your site.

It depends. If you're using a brand new domain and you're solely depending on search engine traffic, then it could take several weeks. If you're bookmarking it and promoting it effectively, it could be much sooner.

Assuming I'm not using a mailing list or anything, it takes about a month before the average affiliate site starts returning a profit.
