Best Way to Promote an ebay store selling handmade tee shirts? seo? smm? what?

Hi everyone.

A good friend of mine has an ebay store selling tshirts he design and make himself. He actually sold quite a number of tshirts, got 49 feedback, 100% positive. He wants to sell more of those tshirts.

How will seo work for an ebay store?

How about SMM? anything else?

Any suggestions and recommendation will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

You should treat ebay listing the same way you would a traditional website. The only difference it that you will have to get backlinks faster than usual because ebay is auction based.

Your friend should open up an ebay store and get backlinks to that store that way it will show in the Serps and get him more ching ching! lol

        Yep.

There is no automatic marketing for an ebay store. It's all manual.

Oh no. I mean using seo softwares like MS,SENuke etc? or its the manual way the better option?

          Thanks.

Here's how I would do it - not saying it's the best way - but it's the way I prefer:

Set up a blog, post related articles and promote that blog as usual.

In the articles stick strategic links to your ebay store, or to specific products in the ebay store.

              Cool. Thank you.

So its really not advisable to build backlinks for the store itself but rather doing article marketing/blogging is a better option.

              Thanks much.

                That's what I would do.

Why promote someone else's site when it could be taken away from you any time?

Semi Automated will work and is faster. I had my ebay store rank #1 for Anime dvds! I treated my ebay store as a normal websore and it worked like a charm!

Also he needs to create a facebook page and get backlinks to this page as well that way he will have two great sources of traffic!

You can try advertising by passing or posting flyers and cards where theres alot of people. The mall and movies would be perfect for this.It also doesn't cost you a thing to pass out cards .it does cost to print the cards and flyers though.

      Sorry if im useless
oh no. Thank you very much.

Those are great inputs, it is just that we are looking into ways of promoting it online.

You can look up keywords related to the handmade t - shirt business and then he can write articles incorporating those keywords that he would want to rank for.

I did a quick search right now on the Google keyword tool (exact match):

      handmade t-shirts = 320 searches
      handmade tee shirts = 16
      personalized t shirts = 8,100
      custom made shirts = 4,400
      novelty t shirts = 2,900

Articles could be about tips or trivia about his t - shirt business. Or he could share how he gets inspiration for his work or things like that. Of course, he could also blog about his latest creations.

Each article should have links and clear calls to action to visit his ebay store to check out his work. The blog should also have a prominent banner or link to his ebay store. It would also be nice if the blog is designed as creatively as his t shirts so he could establish his brand.

Having a blog would also be a great way to connect with his customers and establish a relationship with them.

Maybe eventually he could have a self - hosted website for his t shirt business.
I think that's a good idea, how about a self-hosted website for his tshirt business in which the blog is also incorporated in there? but yeah, having a blog is the more immediate way to go to promote the ebay store, and will just advise him to just jump on full blown site for his tshirt business when found success with the ebay store.

Would you advise a self-hosted blog, or a web 2.0 property from more authority site would be a better option? Let me know.

      Anything else guys?

That way, when you start building links all the juice will go to a site that you own and control.

I think it's also good to use Web 2.0 sites but for the purpose of having a presence there and getting a backlink for your main website or blog.
Alright, so for a better and for longer term goals, putting up a website for the tshirt business is the best way to go than promoting the ebay store? right?

        Thank you.

Yes for long term but for right now money I would do the store simply because it will rank faster and you dont have a backlink limit like you would have a new website but he should definatly start his own website eventually ebay is robbing him with thier high fees!!

Utilizing social media and SEO to generate more sales.

I agree, to start the initial positive cashflow and while putting up the site, promoting the ebay store is great to generate immediate income.

How is ebay stores performs in the SERPS?

Here are a few steps to take:

              1) Purchase a domain that you plan to use for your future webstore.
I suggest using godaddy and use a coupon for discount

2)Forward and mask your ebay store url so it will pull up the store when ever someone search using your new domain.

              3) Use scrubetheweb.com to submit your domain to major search engines

              4) Create a facebook fan page promoting the shirts and link it to your new domain.

              5) (optional) submit your facebook page to search directories using scrubtheweb.com

              6) Do a press release announcing this great new store

              7) Get some social bookmarks

              8) Get some backlinks

              9) Look and cheer with joy for your new customers and money!!!

Create META tags using the Store name, the Store description, and the names of all the Store's custom categories. When you create your custom categories, keep possible search terms in mind.
    Other ways are to...
Link to your Store on your Business Web Site if you have any,or...create one
Promote your Store throughout your sales cycle.
Use message board signature lines to your advantage.

I think this one is also a good idea.

Let me just verify, what do you mean by integrating the store into the fanpage? and how is it possible?

      Thanks.

I thought I was going to be able to give you some great advice since this is what I do. But everyone else beat me to it. There is some real good advice in this thread.

One of the most important things is to get your own website and use ebay as a "funnel" for customers. Make sure you tell all of your customers about your site. eBay fees will catch up to you after a while, and they change all the time. Like somebody mentioned before, you can lose an ebay store since you don't have control over it.

A site and domain name that you control is very important. I still advertise my shirts on ebay every now and then. I basically consider ebay an "affiliate" and their fees are their commissions. I have even put a couple of the shirts on fiverr (with a shipping charge). Sell them everywhere you can break even or make a profit. Tell them about your personal site. I always fill the outgoing packages with ads for my other businesses, like the first one in my signature.

You have some great advice already here.

Where is your friend based? If it is in the USA then you should have 15 custom pages, with your store. With these you want to write things like One page could be, how you print the shirts, and another page all about the tee-shirts. These custom pages rank high in Google.

Another way write eBay guides again these rank high in Google and also link to your store.

In your store heading write good keywords.

Then you categories within your store and you can have 300 of these, each of these categories have keywords / tags.

In your store always list multiple items and good until cancelled.

What type of a store do you have?

    Hope this helps
