Trying to code so visitors can download file from Wordpress site -- pls. help

Hi,

I'm using a shortcode to make a button for downloading a file in a Wordpress site. I'm from the Joomla world where plugins handled all this more or less automatically. Not sure how to proceed in Wordpress. Got a couple of questions.

Here's the shortcode for the button.

[big_button title="Download PDF file" link="place code here" target="0"]


So, what would be the code that goes in there? A simple URL path to the file, or is there any other code that goes in front and back of that?
