No, I don't have a website!

I make jewelry and my friends keep asking me if I have a website. I don't. It's not that I don't want one, I just don't know what I need exactly. I tried to do it myself then I started finding that I needed a shopping cart, auto-responder and who knows what else. I also went to one of those seminars where they give you a free mp3 player to get you there and when you leave, the click and point websites program they are trying to sell ends up being $3000 or more. I couldn't afford it.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can get started at a very low price:
Thanks

So you gave up because you found out you needed a shopping cart and an autoresponder?

Sounds like you're just scaring yourself out of it by making it seem harder than it is.

Building your own website is extremely easy.

And I'm sure you could find a service online that would build one for a hell of a lot less than $3000.

1st think do u need a eCommerce website or a information display website about you and Ur product.
If you need ecommerce type then completely owned by urself type can be costly a bit and needs time to maintain. There r some free type but I think they dont look professikonal as a business owner to own free ones.
So now you can use simple 7-8 website or a wordpress blog or you can combine them both....

    Thanks

Just start with a simple Wordpress site. Just get something up, doesn't matter that it's not perfect right away. Start off small, don't think about ALL the things you have to do. Just do one, then once it's done, do another.

Start with a simple Wordpress site. Just buy the domain, get hosting, and start on the site.

After that you can figure out the rest.

Building a website can be hard if you don't know what you are doing. I would definitely open an Ebay store that charges you $15.99/month with 10 cents per list and you have your shopping cart automatically there and i think it also gives you a unique URL for that ebay store that you can edit and add widgets and all kind of stuff.

    Make it easy to yourself!

    Get a domain

    Get hosting

    Put WordPress on your page

Download a nice, free theme (WooThemes are paid and good for business)

    Download the WP e-commerce plug-in

Play with it and build from there!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will take a crack at it again. I have hosting and a domain name. I just found a step by step course on setting up an e-commerce site.
The e-bay store sounds good also. Maybe when I am finished with the website I'll start on that. I just want to make sure the customers information stays secure.

There are many people on this forum that will build you a professional looking Wordpress blog for a few hundred dollars, or less. There are also people on fiverr that will do the individual components for $5.

When you are starting out it can be overwhelming, and going to a seminar probably makes it worse, as they give you way too much information. A Wordpress blog is a great solution and with the huge amount of themes available they can be customized for any business.

Once you have the WP blog setup you can then add the other components like payment processing, autoresponder, etc.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers

Building a site nowadays is not that difficult even with minimal web programming background.

Try build by yourself by getting a host, domain name, install wordpress, research plugins and start posting. Maintaining the site yourself is also better than letting people to maintain. And for the fee, $3000 is a lot. I don't think you need to pay that much for a site unless it is some enterprise apps.

Seems to me your problem is lack of information. So... inform yourself and do what was adviced above:

    domain name
    hosting
    free wordpress install
    free shopping cart install (optional)

    Wow...someone scared you big time!!!

Even a kid can make an online store nowadays. After you buy a domain name from namecheap.com or godaddy.com , get hosting from hostgator.com(the best in my opinion), after this, install wordpress from hostgator cpanel, and get a free shoping cart plugin from wordpress and you have an online store.

Also you can find very cheap wordpress themes that are made for online stores, and you have all the things you need.

    Hey Rhonda,

Like said before, Etsy... and/or ArtFire.com - Premier handmade marketplace to buy & sell handmade crafts, supplies, vintage and art

These places already have the buyer traffic you need. You can sell your art to them, then lure that traffic to your OWN website. Using an autoresponder on your site, you can build a list of buyers and sell to them again and again.

Having a website is a must for your business if you ask me. And it is super easy.
