What do you pay for quality articles these days?

After reading a few thread recently, I see that some people are charging phenomenal rates like $15+ per 500 word article.

I'm native English. I've spoke English all my life and it's the only language I know. I live in Canada and I'm a high achieving student. What kind of rates would someone like myself charge?

I use to write years back, but since then I've just been a project manager. Interested to see the answer of the question above. Very curious. Thanks!

I use lot of article writers, most of them I have found here in Warrior Forum and I must say that it is difficult to get quality articles for less than $ 15. You might get it for less as an introductory offer or something but once people realise that the writer is good then the demand goes up and so do prices.

Writing comes natural for me so I do most of my own
writing, but a good quality article would be worth $20 - $30.

I do have offline clients that have paid $100 or more for a
quality article, but those articles weren't search engine
fodder... they were for branding and credibility and had
    to be well researched.

I believe that it's worth paying a little extra for quality
    articles.

I started off writing articles online, for internet marketers, in 2008, at about $20/$25 per article.

Over the year or so that I was doing them, my estimation of the value of my own time crept up, and I found that by the time I was charging nearer $50 each for them - and taking a bit longer to write them - it was much easier for me: not only were there more customers in that price-bracket, but they also returned more regularly for more articles (unsurprisingly, because of course they were the clients who knew exactly what they wanted, knew exactly how/where to use them, and regularly got them well syndicated by others).

I didn't understand it in these words at the time, but what had happened was that my clients were actually "article marketers" rather than "article directory marketers".

It was the fact that there were both more customer-retention and fewer competitors, at higher prices, that first made me realise I should be writing them for my own business rather than for anyone else's, which was why I (happily!) stopped doing them altogether.

The writers who have the hardest time of it are those charging $5 or less, perhaps not quite understanding that at that end of the market there are almost as many service-providers as customers. But that's also not surprising, when you think that if a new Warrior asks for advice about making money online, several people will inevitably suggest that he should write articles for marketers - regardless of his apparent standard of literacy!

Clients at the bottom of the market quite often don't really know how to use the material (typically they just put them in as many article directories as they can and then wonder why they don't get much targeted traffic or SEO-help out of them!), are unaware that "there's a whole other world of article marketing out there", and tend to have struggling businesses, which makes them more anxious, overall, and therefore harder to deal with.

What attracts clients to writers with the cheapest prices is the cheapest prices.

Writers who don't quite appreciate this sometimes imagine that competing on price is a sensible way to get started, and that after they have some customers, they'll be able to increase their prices. This is totally fallacious, because the market doesn't actually work like that. At all!

If you can write decently and have some marketing skills, it's actually much easier to sell articles for $25 each than for $5 each; there are more readily identifiable customers for them, and they return more frequently.

Don't tell anyone, but writers working for $5/$10 typically have to find new clients all the time, to survive; those charging $25/$50 don't, because if they provide what their clients need, they'll soon be fully booked.

Wow ... I appreciate the Wisdom ...Now i see why it is not wise to advice people to charge $6 per article .

You get the wrong end of customers... they don't really want quality they want a cheap price

At $20-$25 a pop , it easier to have $100-125 days writing at least 5 articles a day

With automating software like Dragon Naturally speaking , it is easier to create quality articles and make your customers raging fans

It is a viable business model if you can bring in the quality

I once hired Warrior Jason Fladlein to do some articles for me
on a topic that I wasn't that familiar with. Jason was fast and
        GOOD.

By the time that I was ready to order another bunch of articles,
Jason had recognized the true value of his time, and told me that
he was no longer available :-)

Now, Jason is rolling out great products, teaching and speaking
        at events.

I see that as a natural progression in many skills people here
on the forum possess... such as copywriters. I've watch people
go from offering free copywriting to build a portfolio, to charging
$20,000 or more per job... to only writing to sell their own
        products.

I started out offering unlimited coaching at $2000 per year. Now,
my rates here: Internet Marketing Consulting And Internet Marketing Mentoring By Willie Crawford
are $50k, and you have to jump through hoops with a long
        application.

My strategy worked. My only long-term clients are busy business
owners who already sort of know what they want and when they
need to bounce an idea off me, it's often only on a hurried,
        10-minute phone call :-)

We all like to get bargains, but the conversion has slightly
shifted to being a provider, and if that's you, I think that you're
much better off positioning yourself on the high end, and
        focusing on quality.

If I were going to be a ghost writer for example, I'd make
my target clients professional who realized that they needed
to be published for greater credibility, but were just too busy
        to do the writing themselves.

It kind of depends on what I want it for. If I want something good, I'm willing to spend $20 - $30 for a single article. If I just wanted to fill out some content, I would in theory only want to spend a few bucks - but then to be honest I'd probably just write it myself!

I'm sorry bobbobson, I truly don't mean to jump all over you personally here, I'm just taking your quote because it sums up a few other comments I've seen on here...

Why wouldn't you want quality *everywhere* on your sites? If the intent for putting words together is to create "content", why wouldn't it always be good quality work?

I guess I don't get that there's a time and place for "second rate content" on my site and there's a place for "the good stuff". If it's my site and other people's eyeballs are going to cross it - anywhere - I want it ALL to be good.

Articles - Willie hit the nail on the head. Leaning to the high end is always the best way to go if your the provider.

With that being said, I am paying $25 per 1200 word article and i am getting a huge bargain because i am buying 6 to 8 a day. Now the i just hope my writer does not see this post... I would easily pay $50 to $75 for each piece and not think twice due to the QUALITY of the CONTENT!!!

When it comes to content you get what you pay for IMHO...

I just paid 18$ (13 euros) for 10 articles, around 430/500 words each.

The articles are pretty good and written by a native English.

but im a newbie on article marketing so it's easy to impress me

The rate of an articles usually depends on the quality, whether its an internet researched topic or in-depth archival research kind of topic. Personally, I have been writing and re-writing articles to my employers and really depend on the topic.
When I was starting in this business as an article writer, as a newbie, I deliver 5 articles (internet researched topic) at around $3. I was happy back then since it's my first time to earn in the IM world. I am a researcher, (part of my daytime job) and I do conduct research on the topic that would be given to me by my employer.
At present, good quality articles can be around $20-$25, but like I said, it's all up to your client and you regarding the agreement of your job. As long as both sides are satisfied with the quality and the payment, then I could see no problem to it.
The important part in this is both sides will come to an agreement and no sides will feel dissatisfied.

Throughout this year, I've cut back drastically on accepting outside writing; I now work for just a handful of very high end clients. The articles I create for them are usually 1,000 - 1,200 words and they pay me $200 - $230 per article.

Why do so many people think the ability to speak English means you can write articles? SIGH. You used to write so you've got some experience, but I'm constantly amazed at the assumption that article writing is a great fit for anyone who can type in English.

Anyway, I find that most people who pay cheap prices for articles don't know a good article from a bad article. They know it's coherent, written with their keywords and they didn't have to write it.

People who pay more usually have a better idea of what they are doing, IMO. I've had clients pay upwards of $60 for an article of mine, providing angles, ideas, and reference links. The folks that pay 4 or 5 bucks generally give me keywords and want me to come up with their entire marketing campaign.

I write articles for a couple of regular clients for 2c/word. Most writers charge only 1c/word, but the regular clients I have are delighted with my work, and happy to pay the extra.

I've hired cheap writers in the past (1c/word and below), and their writing is fine for web 2.0 properties, article submission and micro niche sites, but for a money site that you care about, it's definitely worth paying the extra.

I have not ordered any article so far as I am myself a writer. I wrote some 500-word articles for even $2.50 apiece. I want to charge more in the future.

Good quality articles aren't just "well written" - they are also "well researched".

This is a great thread, and very relevant to what I'm interested in right now.

I understand that those of us trying to get started should avoid undervaluing our work, but how do we convince people to pay us those amounts when we don't have a large portfolio or list of references yet? It seems somewhat like the usual catch-22 where you need experience to get a job, but a job to get experience...

I know that my research and writing abilities are strong, but the fact of the matter remains that I have yet to do work writing for people in a setting like this. I am also good with deadlines, but the best references I can think of for these points would be my former college professors. :p
