E-Commerce Thread on SEO, Promotion, and More

E-commerce stores. Online stores. Dropshipping. etc.

I have started this thread to try and bring together questions and answers on the operation on an e-commerce online store that sells actual physical goods.

I, myself have started building my store as 8/2011.

Post anything on SEO, design, promotion and anything else related.

One thing that makes the USPS a fabulous deal for the shipper is they provide the boxes for free. Go to their website and learn about those freebies.

You can also have your local Post Office supply you the boxes.

Over the course of a year the cost of boxes can really add up.

ok.. I have some outdated advice.. (I ran a e-commerce site that brought in over 300k a year before google was a serious competitor for dogpile.com ..eeeekk)

make sure you have lots of information about your products, lots of service info, lots of content... still true today (obviously) but this one simple thing made my site #1 before anyone even knew what serps were... heck they didnt even know what google was and aol was the 'only' way to get online... so yeah... always concentrate on your content THAT is NEVER going away

if you need to have a lot of BIG 'stuff' delivered to your home to be reshipped then get a storage unit. Talk to the facility owners/management and give them a key to your unit... when UPS, USPS... whatever comes to deliver or pickup the manager will be happy to open the unit and let the delivery guys do their thing. I used to have a really big unit and the manager knew that deliveries were on the right... outgoing on the left and stuff that was not to be touched was in the back... I never had a problem (hey... umm... they are on camera anyway) The PLUS is that you have a commercial street address

USPS offers free delivery of FREE boxes and other shipping material... just order online

Uh... I don't know why your thread was deleted, but if it was, why are you starting it again? Not a good idea.

Well, I'm assuming it was in error. This is just basic stuff being discussed.

There is nothing controversial going on in here.

It doesn't have to be controversial to be deleted. There are many reasons that threads are deleted, and often it's nothing personal, just a moderator decision for whatever's best for the forum as a whole.

I don't know who deleted your first thread or why, but I'm going to hazard an educated guess: threads that promise to be ongoing, long-term, open-ended catch-all things tend to be deleted, merely on the basis that if one person gets to do them, then everyone needs to be allowed to do them, and it wouldn't take that many of them to clog up the first page forever.

It's not a good idea to repost deleted threads. There are a whole bunch of threads here explaining why threads get deleted, and why the mods can't possibly give everybody a personalized explanation for why they were deleted. It's just part of being a member at a ridiculously huge and busy forum.

I was about to say the same thing, and I have no idea why that thread was nuked.

And now this thread doesn't even have my 'good' response to the other thread.

        I've lost twice.

Sorry, Bill, but this was the only response I had in my emails from the forum.

My other post was one on the importance of properly labeled product pics with keywords.

I am still under construction with no promotion what so ever, and I was contacted by a customer that was trying to buy off the site, but couldn't.

I asked how he found us, and he said through Google Images. Sure enough when I described one of my widgets, there it was on the first page of images linking to my site.

So not only for SEO purposes, but properly labeled product pics may also get you some traffic.
