Aweber Help, Can You Use Single Optin???

Hi People,

Hope you are all feelin good today!

With Aweber can you set it to single optin????

I know there is a way to do this but cannot seem to work it.

For example:

Someone buys a product> enters name and email into optin box> Recieves Email with product (No Confirmation Link First!)

And

I add someones name and email > They get my first email and not the confirmation link!

I know this is possible as I have bought a product in the past and entered my name and email and recieved an email with the product attached without having to double confirm optin!

Anyone?

Are you sure it was aweber who delivered the product with single opt in??

I never thought about using single opt-in as my confirmation rate is in the high 90's because I send people to a page that urges them to go and confirm right this very minute before they forget.

I even use this process for people that purchase anything from me - so they can get on my update/bonus list - before they can get their product.

    Hope This Helps!!

Also if I have multiple lists within my aweber account, can I perform this action on single lists???

    Thanks for your help!

I'm not able to turn off verified opt in because I switched it on when I started my account. Now it's labeled as a "trusted sender" account. Which means that all lists in that account are locked in to having verified opt in. Which is kind of a PITA, but "trusted sender" accounts have the highest deliverability rates.

I was going to start another account without using verified opt in so customers wouldn't have to confirm. But I ran into a snag there, because I was going to automate the process by using a parser. So when someone gets added to a customer list they are automatically removed from the corresponding prospect list. But aweber requires all leads from a parser be sent a verification email. Which defeats the purpose of not wanting to make customers verify.

I could set up a separate account for customers that doesn't require verification. But then I'd have to either manually remove people from prospect lists or just leave them on and look like a fricktard when the get a prospect promotion for something they already bought.

So I decided to stay with my "trusted sender" account for all lists and deal with having to explain to customers why they should confirm again.

Yes, You can turn off the double optin/confirmation link by just turning off the Verified Optin link under list settings. You can toggle it on or off by clicking the On/Off links.

Apologies for going OT, but I have a question for GoGetta and unfortunately I can't PM yet as I have less than 15 posts.

GoGetta, I noticed in one of your posts that you had access to a tool that gives you UK business owner's names. I'd be delighted if you could let me know what this is or, if you'd rather not spill the beans, at least point me in the right direction!

Sorry for my brief interruption everybody!

    Thanks,

        Thanks Ken.

I tried to find that and called AWeber a few days ago and they said since I can't switch to single opt-in now for some dumb reason. It's ridiculous.

So I just went and got an Email Aces account. I'll keep sending through AWeber to my current list, but I'm building with single opt-in through Email Aces now.

Yeah, I just edited my first post after realizing that my largest list doesn't have an option to disable the confirmation, but all my other lists do. Maybe after the list gets to a certain size they won't let you change it or something.

You might try creating a new list in your aweber account and see if the option is there. Aweber seems to be deliberately making it difficult to find out what the rules are about this -- they have single opt-in allowed in some cases, but they obviously prefer you don't use it.

I have been using my AWeber account for years and am
able to use single opt-in for my list if I choose to do so.

However, I know that other AWeber customers are not
able to turn-off the verified opt-in in their accounts.

Here's a video of how I do it in my account:

Also, you can only turn-off verified opt-in for a list at
the very start when you create it - and not after subscribers
        have been added.

Note that I rarely use single opt-in lists anyway as I want
to make sure that only those people who have requested
        the information receive it.

Actually, I just went in and disabled the verified opt-in for a list with 800 subscribers, as well as two smaller lists. But another list with 6k didn't have the option to change it. That's what I mean when I say their rules are confusing.

            Thanks for the correction Ken.

I agree that the AWeber rules on who can and cannot use
single opt-in - as well as how to do it - needs clarifying.

I wish that they would lay out the rules in black and white
somewhere on their site for all to see.

I got the information directly from Customer Support at
            AWeber.

Some great posts, I think there is a way you to alter the settings in awber by clicking on "My Lists" and then "List Settings" in the top left corner. There should be a green "Status ON" box in the right, after you click a popup will ask you to confirm that you're changing this setting, and then the green box will turn red with "Status OFF."
    Hope this helps!

Unfortunately Aweber has disabled it and can no longer be turned on or off.

According to their website it does state you are no longer able to do single-optin. You can click the box to specify a single-opitn and the box will be red confirming single-optin but it will work the same as a double-optin.

I do have a couple lists from before Aweber disabled single-optin and they still allow me single opt-in, but I have not been able to get it to work on new lists.

GetResponse lets you be a little more aggressive with single opt-in. Once you're with AWeber for a while, they don't let you set your account to single opt. Plus I've heard even if you get a few spam complaints here and there, which is going to happen no matter what, they'll make you switch back to single opt-in. That's why I have a GR account and AWeber account now. You're leaving SO much money on the table using AWeber.

UPDATE: I saw I posted here in February before lol... Since then I've been using only GetResponse for new subscriptions. I recommend it.

      Hi

Came across this thread when I was searching for the same solution.

I deleted my list and started again but it still, despite showing off, implements an opt-in.

I guess there is no way to turn it off now.

If any one does know though, please let me know!

There is a lot of confusion on this issue.

What I have found out from attending a seminar recently is that once you have sent out a mailing using double opt-in when you first started your account, you can't switch back to single opt-in.

But if the first email blast you ever sent was to a single opt-in list, then you can switch back and forth between the two options at will.

That was what I gathered and it does explain the mystery of why some can change the option and others cannot.

What I have done is just use another autoresponder (like Get Response, or iContact) for single opt-in purposes. They can come in handy from time to time.

For example, with Get Response, I have more options when it comes to using their API to get subscribers.

And with Aweber, I can also take advantage of opportunities like The Viral Secret when it comes along. There are many examples.

Single optin will work -- definitely it will work,
but it will never build your reputation.

Always target to build a reputation than focusing what works! Reputation will automatically lead it towards a rather reliable workable solution.

Sorry to disagree folks, but a couple of things above are simply not true.

I originally had a double opt-in list in Aweber, switched it to single opt in Oct '10 when my list was close to 1000 subs.

I still have the option to switch it back and forth in my settings, but the list was DEFINITELY originally created as double opt in.

Also, for anyone thinking that having single opt-in will damage your reputation.. simply not true. There's a lot of misconception about single opt-in (people think they are illegal / against "CANSPAM") that is JUST WRONG.

Double opt-in is NOT a requirement of CAN-SPAM legisalation. It is simply a way for autoresponder companies to make sure they are protected... as long as you personally follow CAN-SPAM guidleines with your mails, you can still use single opt-in without worry.

In fact, more damage is done by people saying "don't use single opt-in - its bad!" to stifle newbies who are trying to grow lists from scratch.

I was having an issue last night where I was testing my aWeber web-form and even though I set the double opt-in option off, I kept getting the confirm opt-in email. So I emailed aWeber support and they said that even if you have double opt-in disabled, there are instances where confirmation is required, and one of them being signing up to the list multiple times from the same IP address - like when you are testing the web-form!!

The other instances are when someone signs up without the referring URL where your web-form is (so that includes manually adding an email in your control panel), and if someone signs up with a popular email service with username of four or fewer characters.

So here's the tip: YOU CAN ONLY TEST YOUR WEBFORM ONCE WITHOUT GETTING CORFIRMATION EMAIL!! That's what happened to me last night- I remember that when I tested it first time, I didn't get confirmation email, but I realized that I put the wrong thank-you page URL, so I changed it, and after that, I started getting the confirmation email...

Another thing is, even if you disable the double opt-in, you should still disclose the fact that when you sign up, you may actually need to confirm your subscription, and also you need to write a nice "please confirm your subscription" email because someone may get it.

I hope aWeber will make this available (tech support said he'll pass it along but who knows...) but in the meantime, I hope this can save other people's time, and may be some hair by minimizing the time you pull on it.

I use single optin and yes, there are certain email addresses that will still need to confirm to be on your list. What I have found though is the large majority of these email addresses are fake ones that would never get confirmed anyway. So I don't bother telling people they may need to confirm.

      • For whatever it's worth... and it's possible this might have changed, but:

A couple years ago I was going crazy arguing with a friend of mine because he was convinced you could do single optin with Aweber, and I was convinced you couldn't. It turned out we were BOTH right.

From what Aweber support told me, if the very first campaign you ever create in the account is double optin, then the ENTIRE ACCOUnT will permanently be double optin ONLY without any possibility for changing it. Here is the email conversation with aweber (starts with me, then them, etc.):

        > > > I'm afraid I don't understand... a friend of mine also uses Aweber,
        > > > and he's able to turn on or off verified opt-in for each campaign in
        > > > his account, at any time. Why am I not able to do the same?

        >> Once confirmed opt-in is enabled it cannot be disabled
        >> in the case that you turned this on for all lists, and
        >> established your reputation with the ISp's this way.

        > I'm afraid I'm still confused... if I enabled confirmed optin for ALL
        > lists at once, then I don't think I was aware of it. How is it that
        > my friend can turn it on or off for any individual list at will?
        > That's what I'm looking to be able to do also.

If you only had one list, and you turned on Verification for webform
submissions, the system by default will have it on for every list
thereafter. This is for a continuous audit trail throughout the account
for the ISP's which cannot be interrupted.

I have read your response, I do understand what you are trying to accomplish.
The issue is how you established your reputation, the only
way to avoid this is to open another account with verified opt in off,
but we cannot transfer the leads to the new lists.
So unless this has changed, be very careful of how you FIRST setup the account. Once it's set to double, you're stuck there forever. I don't want to open a new account because I have one on the old pricing, and having single optin isn't important enough to me to justify a higher cost.
