Best way to capture emails through selling an ebook?

Hi guys,

Been a long time since I've been on these forums. Trying to get back in to focusing on generating some passive income again..

I'd heard that a great way of building a large list fast is in selling a great product at a low cost (with a lot of help from an army of affiliates) and capturing the email through the sale of the ebook (or whatever product).

What are some good ways of getting email subscribers through the sale of a product?

Are we talking directing people to a squeeze page before they can buy the book, or an opt in after the sale?

Is it legal to make people have to opt in in order to buy your product?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

No, you can let them to buy first and on your thank you page, you can say that enter your email to download. Product will be emailed to you... Or something like that.

If you are using other product to deliver your product (DLGuard for example), then you just need to add your list ID and that's it. After they pay...their email will be signed to your list. And you don't need to have opt-in form.

So it's really up to you...

Another way to do it is to offer that bonus or incentive right in the ebook itself. I'm also seeing this more and more in actual printed books.

"Go to my web page at [url] , enter your email, and download the special bonus I've set up just for buyers of the book."

That bonus could be an extra report or set of reports, a video, software, free product updates, whatever. It could even be a free trial to your entry-level continuity product if you have one.

Most of the products I have bought send you to a registration page before you can get the product. I think that's accepted.

That's what I do with my detox ebook that I sell. I tell them it's so that I can send them updates of the eBook if and when they become available.

I have never had anyone complain or ask for a refund for that reason.

Why piss off new customers by having them optin to buy or download your product. That was probably done during the presale itself. If not offer some bonuses after the purchase for opting in right on the download page.

Legalities aside, buyers will be far more receptive to additional promotions down the road if they are given the option to subscribe after the purchase. What I have found to be powerfully effective to ensure future high conversions is to have have an incentivized bonus on the thank you page. The buyer would have to optin to receive the free bonus as an OTO.

Like Margo Tuul said, you can use a product like DLG that will automatically put a person onto your email list as soon as they purchase.

Yes, I like the idea of giving them the choice to opt-in in return for a great free product OTO. Nice idea, myob.

Margo, I'm still not sure whether it's legal to make someone HAVE to opt-in in order to receive the download they already paid for... I guess it would build your list, but of happy, sticky customers? I don't know.

You can then use DLG and you still get their emails. I've seen both ways and i even talked with my buddy, who was selling $2,500 ecourse and customers had to enter their email to get access. I asked him about that...is he getting more refunds...support emails or people complaning about it...he said no.

It's all about testing...yes, you can't say just "enter your email - end of story". If you say that "enter your email to access this product and receive free updates". And add your support email there. What's wrong with that?

Also keep in mind that every niche is different. In Make Money Online you will see lots of whiners and guys who complain day after day, when in weight loss niche you don't see that. They just want to sign up for everything they can...

      I use DLGuard...so i can't say how opt-in form is and what's the response..

Paypal in particular frowns upon requiring someone to opt-in
before they can get something that they have already
    paid for.

My preferred method of getting someone on my list who
has already purchased is the free bonus. This works
beautifully even from sites such as Amazon where I'll
sell a Kindle ebook, delivered by Amazon, and then in
the ebook offer a free bonus (often the audio version of
the ebook) in exchange for the opt-in.

Yes, perfectly legal, as long as you tell them that before they pay.

If you don't tell them up-front, take their money, and only then reveal that product delivery is conditional on them opting in too ... that's nasty.

As Willie mentions above, PayPal can also have a great problem with you, if you do that. It takes only one (justified) complaint to lose your account over this.

DLG is good for this, because when a person buys the product, DLG can automatically send them their product and at the same time send their info to Aweber. And then Aweber sends out a confirmation email. And if you word the confirmation email right, then you have a very high opt-in rate. For instance I give out free updates w/ purchase, so I mention that in aweber's confirmation email. They must confirm to receive the free updates.

Great thoughts and ideas all round, really helpful guys thank you.

I think @Alexa, that's a really important point to be aware of.

It's all about the order in which you do things in!

It is perfectly above board to get people to opt in to get their download. You tell them that they need to register their product. This is where they put in their name and email in order for you to send them the link. The other way would be to offer them something else that they need for free and ask them to sign up for that.

You can offer one chapter of the ebook for their name and email. Then just put links to the full book sales page in the 1 chapter teaser.

I never did it, but it makes sense...
