How tough to beat sites like about.com and yahoo local for first place?

There are a lot of terms that show up with about.com, wikipedia, yahoo! local, etc in first place.

Does anyone have experience beating these pages out? Have you found that the competition is very fierce for these terms, or do they tend to be easier than most?

I've specifically seen WSO's that say don't worry about them as they aren't real competition. But I am wondering if anyone has actually taken one on and won, and how much work it took.

Well I mean, not to point out the obvious, but they are going to be extremely, nearly impossible to beat

The thing with these sites is they have massive authority but they are not impossible to beat.

For example if you have a "Dead on Domain" for a term and build real authority content with the right internal SEO and have a good "Authority" plan for backlinking you can easily beat Wikipedia, Amazon, About.com, etc.

Their main power comes from their internal linking and that creates what we call the Cyclone effect. The more internal links they have the more votes for those pages gain and relative authority they gain from the main site.

It may take time for your authority to usurp those but it is certainly not impossible, you just have to be more relevant and more authoritative in Google's eyes.

    All the best
