I have a client who recently got a warning from LinkedIn about connecting with people he did not know. Does LinkedIn have a policy on how they determine when to send out these messages. Most of my clients have never had a problem, but this has come up with this client a few times.

The first time right after he uploaded his email list from yahoo, like LinkedIn encourages you to do in the first place.

Is it a percentage of people that do not connect back with you, or a certain number of I do not know him or spam replies?

How do they determine he is doing this? I am looking to find out what the safest course of action is for him.

Thanks!

Andy

I do not have any pending requests in my LinkedIn box right now, but I am wondering if there is an option to mark someone as someone you do not know when you deny a request to network. Many people are more worried about collecting contacts than they are about actually making valuable connections and some people are not tolerant of being contacted by those they do not know or were not "introduced" to.

Yes, if you deny the request, you can tick off that you do not know the person who sent the request.

I appreciate the insight on this! This is what I thought, but I wanted some insight from people smarter than me on this.

Linkedin has a policy not to invite members unless you know them. What happened is you invited people and five of them said they did not know you, so linkedin gave you a warning. You have to write to them that you understand their policy and procedures and they will reinstate the invites.

I have a yahoo account I use for personal purposes and I believe every email you ever send is automatically added to your address book unless you deselect that. That would easily result in emails being added of people you might have contacted about customer service requests or other one-off issues.

Personally, I have never just done the automatic upload of a contact list for any service for reasons like that and also because I have a lot of contacts from over the years who I've fallen out of touch with or it never went anywhere and probably wouldn't remember me. I think it's better to just individually enter in contacts I do still know or would know me.

I don't know if it's an option, but he may also want to see about exporting an address book to Excel first, removing extraneous people and then uploading that list to LinkedIn.

I think he's likely to have far fewer issues because most likely the problems are coming from people who decline the request and check the box that they have no clue who he is.

Mostly they track the number of rejections and conclude that you are soliciting for connections.Same case with facebook.
