Can ENOUGH Money Be Made With An Amazon Site?

Plain and simple. I have a nice product domain, aged and want to build it out. I was looking into an amazon site but really at 4% commission can ENOUGH money be made?

I have a goal of $4,000 a month (about $140 a day) in ANY Im venture I try my hand at. So far im not even close LOL.

I also have an account at PopShops where I can get a designer to add content and put up links to direct products but that is a lot of time for design work and such.

So back to the original question. Can 1 Amazon store be ok for this goal. Average product is about $70 so @ 4% I guess im looking at $2.80 per item? WOW

Why are you restricted to only 1 domain. It would be hard to make that kind of money per month from one site. Having a dozen sites would make it a lot more likely.

Also, the amazon commission percentage changes based on how many items you sell. If you make 4000 dollars from amazon sites, your commission will be a lot closer to 8% than 4.

Well I only say one because I want to try and manage them (backlinks, articles, etc) so start off slow then build up with my other product domains. So I take it then the $4000 goal is a hard reach with 1 site eh?

I would think $4,000 would be a hard number to hit with just 1 Amazon site. Why $4,000? what's wrong with a nice $1,000 or even $500 a month Amazon site?

What is the search volume for the target keyword of the product?

I only say $4000 because that is what I want to live by (to feel secure) so I can take other things tat I do and in the big picture of it all total $4,000 that would be ok to. I was just seeing if it was do able on the 1 site.

as far as results go here is a little info

Keyword = 4,400 Global Broad and 2,900 Local Broad

Keyword Exact 140 Global and 110 Local

This product can be crossed sold in 2 different sports and some of the TOP keywords within this product itself are the brand names of the products (example COKE is the brand and SODA is the product)

There are a lot of related products as well that can be sold with this item so it makes for a GREAT store I belive its just now if its worth the time to put in it.

My sympathies -- I didn't realize this either when I first started looking for keywords, but the "Broad" keywords Google shows you are of little value in determining actual traffic.

The "Exact" figure is the one you should focus on, and 140 Global/110 Local is not exactly a jackpot. I think the best thing to do here is not put too much energy into this site, since it might not earn you much if any money.

I suppose there are exceptions - if you can provide a TON of value and content for people who are passionately interested in this topic and this exact keyword, it might be worth it.

Yeah, it will all depend on the number of searches your niche has.

And while it is possible for one site to make $4000/month with Amazon, if you've never done it before I think that would be a pretty lofty goal. Why not focus on getting your site to make $10/month first, then $50/month, then $100/month and so on until you hit that $4000/month mark?

Why is there a limit on how much you can earn?

At ~$2 commission per advertised item you could reach this goal with persistent work.

I mean even if you only get 100 uniques per day to your page and make 1 sale, why not work on getting 200 uniques per day and make 2 sales.

Ie: why would you suggest there is some sort of limit on what you can earn.

It's basically limitless and a direct correlation to how much work you put into it.

I agree with the above post.

It all depends on the potential traffic for your keywords.

I've actually changed my thinking regarding multiple niche sites versus a few bigger sites.

My strategy moving forward is a combination of the 2. For larger markets I'll be building bigger sites and smaller markets I'll stick with the mini niche type sites with just 5-10 reviews.

I don't want to have to manage any more than 10 sites at a time.

I think the traffic could be there but then I noticed that should it be JUST a review site (which to me looks spammy) OR a full blown out e-commerce site with maybe articles about certain brands around the product?

It all depends on the keywords and potential traffic for them.

This is where you need to be a little mathematical (something I hate) in your approach.

Do some more keyword research and you'll know whether it's worth expanding the site or not.

If there are a heap of buying, long tail keywords with significant traffic you can capture by writing additional articles then go for it. If not, work on improving on the keywords you're already targetting.

Brad here. I like your goals and clear focus. Your right - 4% is generally not much of an incentive. But our approach has been to set up multiple streams of income. Look at a lot of the truthful marketers who show their income -- they always show multiple sources of traffic and income.

I believe Commission Junction (just one example of many) has a great program. They offer physical products. Their program sponsor and clients believe that there is a growth coming in these products.

I like CJ because they continue to provide training and up-to-date industry news and information for affiliates. Rather than the training we all purchased when we first came into the programs - this is current - on time information.

CJ as well as others in this niche - prosper when their affiliates prosper. They will work with some affiliates to improve their program - depending on the marketer that selects you.

We just wrote a post on the topic and CJ in particular. It may be useful for your research - I would be interested in your comments.

Again - I see great focus in your comments. Wish you all the luck and ultimate success in your business. Hope my post is helpful in your search.

    Cheers!

I definitely think having several sites is going to

    1) Increase your chances of hitting the $4K/month mark, and

    2) Give you more security

You'd hate to only have one site- even if it is making $4K/month- then have Google's next panda update knock your site down to oblivion

That's not enough to make even $100/month Unless your plan is to build a site targeting hundreds or thousands of keywords, I suggest going for something with more volume (at least 1000/month exact local).

Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned that 4% is just the base commission rate on Amazon. It only takes 6 sales or so in a month to get it bumped to 6%. 7% isn't too difficult to reach either.

High-ticket products + good search volume and you can make a ton from Amazon. $4,000/m from a single site is doable, but probably not from a single or even a handful of keywords. If you want to go that route you need to make a BIG site targeting tons of keywords/products.

I can't see why not. However it would be a lot easier if you spread your income source from other affiliate sites. Putting all your eggs in Amazon can be tricky. Not impossible but would take insane amount of work.

it's all about targeted traffic. so theoretically if you have one site receiving thousands of visitors a day, you can achieve any goal. i guess the trick is in picking a powerful, evergreen niche and offering good content.

As a few others have said, don't focus on just 1 site. You'll be limiting yourself. If you can successfully get a site to earn $5-$10 a day, why not duplicate what you've done with another site? And another....and another, etc.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Are you referring to commission of $4000 earned or sales of $4000.

If the $140 you mention is commission that means you would have to sell +- 50 items a day. Is that possible?

I have just started a jewellery site and the average item is between 200-3000 $.

If a item is sold for $3000 does that mean based on 4% I will get $120 for that referral?

yea I was looking at $4000 a day in commissions. I realize now that I may have to go after more sites but its just the time I dont have since I work a 9-5 job. I have some other avenues of income as well but everywhere I look I see people saying how there doing well ($2000 or more a month) but realize they have maybe 20 + sites. I dont think I could manage that work load right now.

I hate to say it but this really does require the Math.

Your target is $4000 a month? ($133 a day on a 30 day month assuming visitors are consistent each day)

Lets say you sell enough product to hit the 7% commission rate - you'll need to sell approx $2k every day to hit your target.

Now that you know that - what's the value of the product your selling (or average value if your selling different products) - lets say its $100 (makes the math easy) - so you'll need to sell 20 widgets to hit your target.

Now we know that - you'll need to calculate your conversion rate for your product vs the traffic you have.

Assume you have 100 uniques per every sale i.e. 1% (if your selling affiliate products you should be able to calculate this from your own stats that I am assuming your tracking - i.e. visitors, sales, click through rate etc). So if you have a 1% conversion then you'll need 2000 uniques a day to hit your target - 2000 x 1% = 20 sales.

Now you know the traffic you need - you can then start a strategy about how you'll obtain them.

For most of the sites I run - i start off with a very simplistic business case model like the one described above - yes its a pain in the ass to do and yes no-one likes the math - but understanding what you need to do to achieve your goals can get you going in the right direction - otherwise it can feel like your groping around for the light switch in the dark - you know its there but damn its hard to find!

I think alot of posters above have already said but if your running your livelyhood from one site be prepared for some sleepless nights - the risk of that one site being affected in the serps or by competitors can be significant. More sites (on more topics) really does make some sense. Also consider diversifying your revenue streams (plenty of usefull advise in the forums here) - imagine you build your site get your visitors etc and then something happens to your amazon account - argh!.....

Did you know that Google ranks webpages, not websites?

So you've got a domain that gets 140 uniques per day? Who cares. How many products are you going to list on that site? Each page contributes to your traffic if you can get each page to rank high in amazon on its own.

So you want $4,000 per month?

    $4,000 / 6% (just for giggles) = $67,000 in sales

What's your average product price? $100? Ok. $67,000 / $100 = 670 products sold per month or 22.33 products sold per day.

So let's now assume that you have a 5% conversion rate once on amazon. How much traffic do you need to hit your goal?

    670 / 5% = 13,400 clicks per month

But how many click from the site to Amazon? let's say 60% of the people who arrive on your site click through to amazon:

    13,400 / 60% = 22,333 clicks per month

But how many click from the search engine to your site in the first place? let's say 50% of the people who search for your keyword, click on your site:

    22,333 / 50% = 44,666 clicks per month

So now you KNOW you need 44,666 clicks per month from the search engine to your site, then 22,333 go from your site to amazon. Of which, 670 buy something that averages $100 in price.

So do you build 10 sites or one big one? I say build a couple smaller ones to start, see which one(s) take off and then focus on those as bigger sites. But let's say you stick with ONE big authority site.

You need 44,666 clicks per month to your big site. This means you need to find products and keywords that you can rank for that will TOTAL that amount.

So let's say you're targeting keywords that get 500 searches per month as that might be easier to rank for. 44,666 / 500 = 89 products to sell.

That means you need do 89 reviews of 89 products then get those 89 products ranked on a search engine going right to each individual product review page.

if you did 1 review a day for 90 days AND did your link building and on page SEO every day, you'd be there in about 3 months depending on how fast your pages start showing up on the search engine.

It's all math. It's all numbers and it's all completely possible if you turn off all the distractions and put your nose to the grindstone. Few do. They start gung ho. Last about 5 days, don't see any sales and quit, moving onto the next "big new cutting edge shiny object".

I just gave you a blueprint. Follow it and you'll be doing very well. Ignore it and look for an easier shortcut and you'll be right back here in a couple months looking for something new to try.

I've seen it a million times now.

You can check Flippa and you will find a lot o successful amazon sites. Most of them make $20-$200/m so I would go with 40+ sites to git $4k mark. It definitely can be done with outsourcing, good keyword research and some experience. I would focus on 1 product per site to make it super targeted and review oriented to get only buyers to your site.

Cool thread. I'm focusing solely on Amazon. It's cool because it's totally passive (after a ton of work). Make your number 10 sites for now. It's easy to maintain that many with a full time job. Then, ditch the weak ones (AFTER they rank well so can test ROI) and add more reviews to the strong ones. When you have enough money to start outsourcing, outsource all writing or SEO (or both).
