Top must-haves for the home office

So, I am revamping my home office. I will be buying a new desk and chair. At this point I'm going to get as much life as I can out of my current laptop before I buy a new computer. I do, however want to buy a new speaker system and keyboard so I can use my rocketfish laptop stand.

What else should I add to the list? Is there anything that no home office can go without? Any suggestions?

Thanks

I use project sheets a lot so a wireless printer would be nice (but not a must I suppose), but I would recommend some sort of file cabinet for P and Ls and tax info.

I complete believe I forgot! Well worth the $20, or you can just get dry erase board paint and make one on your wall. GREAT for mapping backlinks or brainstorming.

After your computer, the most money you should spend should be on your chair! There are many health issues that can arise from a cheap, poorly made chair. Blood clots are not uncommon. I'm a UAV operator and I sit in a chair for up to 12 hours a day so my company spends about $5000 each on our chairs! Not saying you should spend that much, but I would definitely get something top shelf! Cheers!

I was thinking of buying a whiteboard. I've got a cork board right now that doesn't get used. I think a whiteboard and a corkboard combined would be a good way to organize current papers, thoughts, ideas, projects etc.

I don't print business stuff out all to often so I'm not sure a printer would do me much good. I've got one in the basement and it's usually worth the walk downstairs whenever I print something.

I have been looking at chairs and the only ones I can find around where I live are the leather task chairs. I've tried a few of them out and some of them are very comfortable for the price. I've been looking at the herman miller embody, but it's almost 2 grand. Looks nice but the only way I'd consider buying it is if I tried it for several weeks and loved it.

EDIT: I just thought of something..... Mini fridge under the desk anybody?

    Monitors! Lot's of them!

    More monitors = more productivity!!

Well, maybe not. But it can help in multitasking and getting things done quicker some times.

+1 for the whiteboard, can't do with out it...

A good surge protector and automated backup solution will save your butt one day, I had to learn the hard way :/

A screen filter is something I can't do without, helps with the eye strain

+100 for the mini fridge, makes me feel at home

Any rec for a screen filter? I had two strokes last year and have severe migraines, but I can't find anything except privacy filters for medical/legal. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about that, I get pretty bad headaches myself and sore eyes if I don't use a filter. I use the 3M Executive Anti-Glare/Anti-Radiation Filter.. It's not a perfect fit on the screen but it does help a lot.. You can buy one for a 20inch for around 80 bucks, but I'm sure you could get one from Ebay a little cheaper

When folks say "surge protector," I assume they mean a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Get the very best you can afford. Not only will it help protect your computer from damage from power fluctuations and blackouts, it can provide a source of power for cell phones or a desk phone if the outage lasts for longer than a few minutes. Power down your computer and just save the battery for more critical things.

Also, some sort of remote backup system. Carbonite is excellent for complete backups. I would also get a Dropbox account for current work in progress.

Dropbox has a lot of other useful features. I've had many an idea while away from my desk and started them on my phone or iPad, and saved them to the Dropbox account. When I get back to the office, they're available immediately. Very handy stuff.

If you live in an area prone to power outages, an iPad with 3G service can be a handy backup for the basics. Email, web, and some development work. Get a Zagg keyboard for it, and it's like a second laptop.

Which 3G service you choose will depend on where you live. I like AT&T's system, both because it's dependable in my area and because they're set up for more rapid expansion of 3G in the future. Verizon is also good here, but they're not positioned as well for a lot of other areas.

A handful of good USB thumb drives is also a cheap investment that will turn out to be handy for a lot of people.

If you have plenty of money then get a great desk chair white board etc.

If money is short get the cheapest laptop you can (if you are in the USA buy from Walmart) No need to worry about a desk or a chair. Use your couch, then move to the floor, then the kitchen table then your bed and so on. Having worked from home for years and years I have never had an office nor desk or chair. I actually prefer to work in front on the TV in the livingroom and bedroom.

Changing positions often is best IMO.

Ok, here would be my ticklist
1: a good chair. (already mentioned)
2: a good monitor, and if you have Windows 7, get a widescreen one. Win7 has a nice split screen option for open windows.
3: Air cooler for the summer
    4: decent printer, scanner
5: good quality speaker/camera for creating videos
6: A clock above the desk, maybe with time zones if you intend marketting gloablly and want to capitalise on different peak times.
7: A to-do list. like the task list
8: an acomplishement list - if you record your acomplishments it can be a real boost at the end of a crap day to review what you achieved yesterday.

Backups can be done online with cloud storage. Microsoft sky drive or the such
Unless you are running a server or your home experiences regular power glitches/blackouts then a UPS can be overkill. A surge protected extension is a must though and dont usualy cost more than a normal extension.

I agree with the whiteboard. Additional to that if you run out of space you can build your own whiteboard by using whiteboard sheet and you can get them from amazon nd you can turn your whole wall into a Whiteboard.

I would suggest you get marker pens of all colours, post-it notes (any size and colour), highlighter pens if you are reading out printed copies. Staplers, a whole puncher, A4 Lever Arch Files, A4 Files, Treasury tags to hold paper together, paper clips, pads and pens.

    Hope that helps

Think of what is best for you in terms of organization, focus and concentration. If I go into a room in my house with a tv, sometimes I won't come out for a few hours of watching Seinfeld re-runs. What helps you to concentrate and stay on task? Some people like to have files on their computer but also find having a 3 ring binder helpful to write notes and refer to them. I've had very productive days sitting on a couch that sinks a bit , but I was organized and that's what made the difference.

I am not understanding the idea of the white board.

Why not just use things on your computer such as MS word.

If you keep everything on your computer you have it all with you when you travel. You can literally work from the beach(if you can find shade so you can see the screen ) if you keep everything on your computer with proper back up of course.
