I even created one on how to use a subdomain
so the content looks like it's coming for your
site...

How do you protect your videos if you are setting up a membership?

Thanks for the video David, it helped me get a video up and running, but it is totally unprotected .

if someone joins my membership, they can steal hte URLS of my videos and walk out the front door with all my material. This is NOT good.

The only option I have seen is an expire set up, but that would mean newmembers coming in are not going to see the video if I let it expire in a month or 2..

  A lot of great videos. Thanks for how to's. I am working on a membership site with Easy Member Pro... and was looking for a good way to embed videos into the site. I didn't realize Amazon S3 was so cheap.
  
  Does anyone know how to embed an SWF video file without using S3? I would like to use my own hosting account to host the videos instead of the S3 service. I don't necessarily need to host the videos on the same hosting account as the membership site website.

Don't open that link, multiple popups and tried to launch Java on me. That says something bad is happening there when Java comes up.

S3 Media is by far an excellent bandwidth source to host your videos for both blog and website!

Here is an absolute, great player for you to use! It will automatically connect to S3 for you, upload the video, allow you to adjust the size of the video window, and then generates the code that you can copy and paste to your blog or website! Instant video feed!

You can also set up a Re-direct for affiliate links. After the video finishes, they are redirected to the affiliate sales page! You can do this in same window or direct it to open a new window. You can also set the video to preload, not preload or autoplay with 4 different video skins.

This player also generates for audio only. You have both options - either video or audio.

My latest blog post is using this player and it is hosted by S3. The file is 106 Mb in size. S3 is by far great!

Hi Kris,

I had the same problem - video on amazonS3 on Wordpress blog.
Use the "flv embed" plug in for Wordpress - simply search for it, install it as per instructions. They have a useful instructions page on the site where I was able to glean all I needed to know to get it up and running, no problem (beware of blank spaces in the filename, Wp doesn't like it

).

I had one problem with the plug in: it offers a "posterframe" option allowing an image of your choice to be seen instead of the obligatory black starter screen. Although I followed the instructutions to the letter, I couldn't get it to work. I gather from comments on their blog that I'm not the only one. Does anyone have a solution for this?

This worked great for me, but any idea how to protect it so only teh people on mys ite can see it? I am using the videos for a membership site and don't want people that are not on my site to be able to see the content. The videos are hosted on Amazons3

In order to protect the page itself so that it can be viewed by your members only (paying or free members), you need something like http://DigitalAccessPass.com to protect the page and get people to login first before they can view it.

The page itself is already protected with the wpwishlist plugin, my question is how to protect the video itself so no one can get the location from teh source code or anything and share the video off the site. I have read this is something I should worry about, no?

Just to make it clear to those new to S3:

Underneath the relatively un-user friendly exterior, it's no different to
hosting your files on any other hosting account (in fact simpler in many
ways). It's well worth the initial effort...

Apart from it being a bit 'bare bones', the main difference is that it's
effectively 'pay per view'...

...every time someone views a file, you pay for it.

That's why it's worth using S3's 'expiring links' ability: you can then help
lessen 'bandwidth theft' - which is more important with video, because the
amount you're paying for someone else to download is greater.

That part either takes programming knowledge (to use effectively and securely),
or a 3rd party plug-and-play solution...

There are several already offered on this page, and others too (including
mine - viddymatic.com ).

Main thing is, don't be shy of S3, take your preferred solution, and give it a whirl
(CloudBerry or S3Fox make it very easy to add/edit videos to in your S3 account).

Check out http://S3MediaVault.com . It has the Flowplayer in-built. Just plug and play.

And it also protects your S3 videos so that they can only be played from your blog.

Ok, now I understand. If you have your videos located on your own web site, then DigitalAccessPass will protect your videos too.

But if you have your videos hosted on Amazon S3, then you will need a plugin like S3MediaVault.com that will get an expiring URL from the S3 server, and that timed url will expire in say, 1 minute (of course, once your user gets the expiring link, then the video downloading time itself is not restricted - user can take 3 hours to download the same video if he has a slow connection).

It's just that if he shares that link with someone else by email or say posts it on a forum somewhere, then the link would have already expired (expires in 1 minute from the time of "generation") and no one else can access the link even if they go directly to that link on Amazon's S3 server.

Makes sense?

You might also want to check S3FlowShield. It makes secure embedding of audio/video/downloadable files very simple:

This will make it so the links to your media cannot be shared with non-members.

The plugin and the built-in player are very customizable.

This is really solid software and works perfectly for embedding and protecting Amazon S3 videos on a wordpress blog.

Another excellent solution is http://www.viddymatic.com. I specifically like the way it gives you easy one-button access to the S3 Video code. Very flexible.

:confused:Hello, I've read and tried to understand it yet have failed to do so. This it's my dilemma;

I have a script for a social network. Members get to upload video, audio and photo(no copyrighted material). With each upload, they get the option of settings, (only me, friends, everyone, some friends, etc.).

My questions are;
1- How to use Amazon services to provide an excellent media experience maintaining the same security options set by members?

2- How to allow members to upload media directly to Amazon saving my server resources in a secure manner.

The important thing it's to maintain the very same security options set by members for each media. I need to make sure security will not be an issue......It seems Amazon has left the task of figuring this out to outside developers and I see many plugging, yet not one has answered my question. Smugmug figured out how to use it in a 24hr period and saved 500k on it. I'm hoping to find guidance. The script it's PHP/MySQL...Thank you.

This totally depends on your social network script... you would need some very tight integration that I'm guessing doesn't come as standard, sorry.

You could try posting on Guru, Elance, Odesk or RentACoder to get someone to modify the script for you?

(though no doubt Wil's is indeed very capable).

Luigi,

Amanda's right: when you add in requirements for different users requiring different settings things start getting complicated...

...especially when you're dealing with storing multiple Amazon S3 passwords (which you'd need in order to allow uploading and protection of S3 files)...

There's a risk in just storing one user's S3 password (and even then there are solutions that will store it completely unencrypted in Wordpress and such).

Probably worth looking at a tailored solution in your case. And whatever you do don't skimp on running a multi-user environment on your server without a proven and robust setup! Good luck with it.

Thank you Amanda and 4Highflyers for your guidance. At this point I believe I would need a good engineer to set something solid for me. I've looked through Odesk, HireAcoder, and some of the other outsourcing sites and found it both fascinating, to have all this pool of talent available to you, and wondering if the information posted (including votes, work history and reviews) could be somehow manipulated. Have any of you used these sources in the past, and if so, would you share your personal experience? Thank you.

PS, Would I be able to use them for the streaming of all my public files? Let's say I could not find the solution I seek, could I still use Amazon services to store and stream all my public files? For example I will have videos for anyone to access, embed to other sites, etc. Could I use Amazon? I constantly read about time frame to view these files and find it confusing. In plain english, could I set the files on front page to be viewed by anyone at anytime, and the files within the site(those deemed public) by all members. This would be enough for me to use until I feel comfortable enough with an engineer to work on the rest.

  gets sucked off your Amazon S3 account (by people watching your videos,
  or downloading your files). And you control - to a degree -who gets to

  Grab an S3 account and have a play with it using the great little free

  For your outsourcing advice, probably best to use the search box using
  'odesk'. There are many tips and feedback you'll find that way.

I can vouch for Cloudberry as my favourite way of managing the majority of file on my S3 account. In terms of videos and wrappers I have been using Easy Video Player which you can see in use on both the sites within my signature.

Unfortunately, CloudBerry is no good for a Mac... but s3Fox is an alternative for Macs.

Are there any other recommended file management systems for S3?

I was using S3 to stream longer videos for a membership site I have, and it was really slow. Amazon Cloudfront is the way to go, coupled with the FLV WP plugin. And get the Firefox S3 plugin to manage everything. I learned this from a Youtube video by Jim Cockrum. Saved me lots of time and trouble. Thanks Jim!

No, you have to actually sign up and pay the few pennies for Amazon s3 hosting.

If you are asking if there is a free way to embed a video that you are paying to host on s3.

Sure... there are any number of free video players out there. Just do a search on google.

Yeah I've got an S3 account and I've downloaded the JW Player and SWObject 2 but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to work. They say its easy but their wrong.

I downloaded the JW Player from here:

Assuming you have set your permissions on your Amazon file to allow it to be viewed (easy way to check is to copy the url and paste it into a browser)...

Then it should be as simple as pasting in the absolute path to the file in amazon http:// included wherever the player solution you are using asks for the source file path.

Every player is different but all should display it if you set them up correctly, set your file permissions to public in Amazon for that file, and paste in the correct url for the file in the source file settings of the player solution you are using.
