How many use Google Trends? Look at this...

I've never seen this before and it really started making me think (look at #3). This screen capture was taken 1/6/09 @ 2:08p Central time.

I suspect it's because it's symbols and not a real search term. It's kinda strange, IMO.

Your search - ✈ ▌▌ - did not match any documents.

Why is it a trend if it's not even searchable?

"It really started making me think..." other than the obvious, am I missing something?

What did it make you think about?

Well, to me it looks like evidence that if you know how to do it, you can get the number three spot on google trends, even for things which give no search results.

    Now THAT makes me wonder...

.... it makes me wonder how I can do the same thing, so I can get others to write blog posts, reviews and build pages around exactly what I want them to, just by putting the term in the trend results.

Figuring out who or how to get in that spot could mean a lot of traffic to your website. How could you possibly manipulate googles database like that though?

I guess it would have to be something insanely viral right?

The reason I said it got me thinking was (as some of you already figured it out) the #3 position has been compromised. Wait, let me re-phrase that: the #3 position is the only one we know has been manipulated. Someone figured out how to do this and they're showing off.

Right now the plane and 2 towers is at #7 Google Trends

  • In case you are wondering, those symbols are in the font WINGDINGS in Word. I think...wingling, wingding...something like that. you can open Word and find that font to experiment with.

Maybe that is how they did it. But if I were going to manipulate google like that, I would have a website on there somewhere pointing to the product I created called "Manipulating Google Trends to Get Traffic" for $47.

My guess is they (whoever is doing it) got bored of cramming whatever they wanted in there and decided to have a little fun. This has probably been happening for some time but it always looked legitimate.

      Hi,

Interesting. Have you clicked on it to see the related searches -

      Related searches:
✈, trends, jews, google trends, justice institute

      Still pondering this.

PS - I can see the plane on the screenshot, but in my browser I get the little box with 2708 written in it.

Besides Google Trends, have a look at Google Insights for IM research. Might find some interesting ideas there.

Pretty obvious, it has been posted on a forum or two somewhere and people have searched it. Simple. No trick. We're just making it more popular by searching it again!

Hmmm... doesn't sound like it would be that easy. Could you rank in the top 100 Google Trends for "purple pumpkin sky" by using a forum or two?

No, because nobody would search for that term.

Last year on the history channel, they had this big machiavelli documentary which broke it down. to make a long story short, the plane and 2 towers mean 9-1-1. there in one of the fonts on MSword which is all symbols. Thats all it means

Now, It does look like thats a popular thing now to make your blog, article, wso, ebay item, etc. pop out against all the others its competing against.

I wonder if google will catch and block it or if they will let it ride.

it's them "hackers" at it again....

On a serious side-note, i heard there are tricks to artificially "fake" trends, i can see this being the reason. Just make something up and submit to many, many RSS feeds and social bookmark until you pass out....something like that.
