Personaly I would never build a site on a brand domian name. Image this very possible scenario...

You spend lots of time building up the site, adding content, building back links & you get the site to page one of Google for the target keyword. You start making sales then you get an email from the brand telling you to hand over the domain name.

This has happened to many people & could easily happen to you.

Here's a way round it though...

Let's say for example the brand keyword you are talking about is "PanasonicCamera"

All you have to do is build a mini site about digital cameras & make the domain name something like DigitalCamerareviews.com

Then make a page on the site targeting the brand name like this - DigitalCamerareviews.com/PanasonicCamera

EMD's don't have the power they used to, you could still quite easily rank the home page without the exact match keyword in the domian.

I've got a few sites ranking #1 in Google for fairly competitive keywords without exact match domian. In fact, I out rank many exact match domians.

While it is true that it is riskier, that depends on how much risk you want to take. Another way to check and see if the company is anti people using their name in domain names is to do a search for that company. Lets say you are targetting "Panasonic digital cameras" to continue with the example above. Do a search for "Panasonic digital cameras" and look at the first five or so pages. If you see "panasonicdigicams.com", "panasonic-camera-reviews.com" and similar sites, it shows that chances are Panasonic doesn't really care too much about people using their brand in domains.

If, however, you don't see any sites like this, you might find that it's because Panasonic send a C&D to everyone they find who has registered their brand name in their domain.

Depends on your risk level as to whether or not you want to go through with it.

I'm glad you posted this and that everyone responded. I'm new to IM and had the same question (somewhere in my piles of notes) about this same issue.

I imagine it is an unfair advantage to build a business using a brand name because then there is a built in customer base and I'm sure the brand doesn't want to share profits.

Thanks for schooling me in this, too.
