How to Go Viral on Facebook?

Frank Kern is giving away his VW bus, as you probably know.

So, I made a video making fun of him... had cheech and chong steal his bus and a bird poop on his head.

Posted it to Facebook this morning and shared with a few friends. I have 30 LIKES and a bunch of people signing up for the contest through my link...

I've also had a lot of messages from Internet Gurus like Jason Moffatt, Jose Rivera, and others saying how funny they think it is...

But, hasn't gone viral.

This is my 1st attempt at viral anything.

Any tips?

Persistance is key. You will need a lot more than thirty likes for it to go viral. Just keep throwing it out there.

People have to see it, like it, and pass it on. See if you can get them to repost it on their boards, tell their friends about it, etc. Get it into as many hands as you can.

Things just don'g "go" viral. It's like a snow ball rolling down a hill, gaining momentum. If you just launched then your still pushing your snowball up to the hill top. It takes time.

The "explosion" happens over-night, but the gaining of momentum certainly doesn't. Unless you have access to the homepage of several sites with millions of visits per hour.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

I have an email list of about 800,000 people... I am not wanting to go there but I might ;-) I'd rather do it organically right on FB with no nuclear devices to force it home.

Any other big FB pros here? I think I'm going to ask Nick Unsworth. He may give me some advice. I'll see if I can get him to chime in. Other thoughts?

Well 800,000 email addys should create a viral effect. If i "owned" 800 000 subscribers i would not be here asking how to promote something.

        This is an experiment

I just left a message with Nick Unsworth. When he replies, I'll post it here...

Who else is super awesome at creating viral FB launches? Anyone you can think of? Who's the best of the best at viral?

Successful viral marketing requires you to think outside of the proverbial box, so with that in mind let's revisit the messages that spread.

Put a "Share" button in the iframe, which btw wherever you're hosting the files, it's not secure (SSL cert), so I had to turn secure browsing on FB OFF, which I rarely ever do, but Ori Bengal recommended the video this morning, so I watched it. Very good video by the way.

People just liking your page isn't going to make it go viral. Most people won't even see that their friends liked the page because likes are grouped together and it might say "John Smith liked Page A and 8 other pages", and your page might be in the "8 other pages".

The share button in the iframe, under the video, or even in the video when it ends, will help.

Are you using Twitter to help drive traffic to FB? If not, I would start and even hire someone if you don't Tweetadder or something similar.

I saw Angry Birds make a post on FB last week - within 40 minutes it had over 4,000 comments and nearly 6000 likes. That's viral!

I have about 30,000 followers on Twitter. I've sent one post. I may setup a few more over the next couple days. Thanks!

I've found that it's easier to go viral for a You Tube video, if it's very entertaining, and you can use sites like StumbleUpon, Facebook and Twitter to make that happen.

The allegory of rolling a snowball down hill gaining mass & momentum is great, what about using Pixelpipe to blast it to however many video sharing websites as poss.
I'll watch it when I get home.
Very interesting thread and comments though.

Ya know how you can create a short domain name after 25 likes, though I'm not sure if existing bookmarks redirect...

Guess it would have to be an mp4 for iPhones and iBooks.

Use HTML 5 for the video or it won't show up on iPhone. If you have the video done in HTML 5 it will work on any phone. If people aren't seeing it on their phones and other devices it's probably being played in Flash or another player that isn't compatible.

My guess is because of a couple reasons...

    1. Lots of people are turned off by profanity and drug references. Most are not going to share that type of stuff with their peeps. (Keep this in mind before mailing off to your mega list bro. It might increase your chances of winning, but will likely kill a lot of subscribers).

    2. It's a contest that is fairly easy to win right now due to lack of a lot of participants. Why would someone share the video when they can just sign up and have a better shot at winning the bus themselves? The more plugs they give you, the less chance they have.

    That's just my instant ideas.

@Jason Moffatt - What's funny is at lunch Saturday in LA you were saying something about when in Hawaii, you never rent nice cars because the locals don't really like tourists and if you cut someone off in traffic, they'll come torch your car or something... so, you said you'd rather rent a 1982 cavalier or something, lol. Tim was like, funny you should say that, Jason... haha. You were like, "huh?"... everybody had a private laugh because the whole mastermind had just watched the animation the day before, lol. But, we wanted to save it as a surprise

Anyway, thx for being a good sport and for the advice.

You may want to link this to YouTube and have other social media links as well. The video does have humor to it but the profanity may turn some people away from sharing it.

Finally watched it and clicked (liked the video by the way, and there is a taent lurking there also...) all the buttons through to the end, (kerns optin and such) Havent promoted his comp as time is running out on it, but a vereeeee interesting experience.
My guess is this is all lead capture for the epnyous Mr. Kern, but then agiain Im not sure.

BTW I did like the video, and as others have said, profanity and drug references may put some folks of, but not me.

    Hope your vid goes BIG..

    Thanks!

I look at what I'm doing as an exploration of what's possible... attempting some sort of viral response in social media... I feel like I'm on the brink of something, if I choose to, it would be a matter of fine tuning.

I suspect there are a few factors in whether a campaign goes viral or not...

    1. Does it appear 'innocent'? If it appears I'm trying to exploit someone/something, probably not going to catch hold...

    2. Is it noteworthy? shareworthy? Is my video pretty funny? Or, ****ing hillarious? I think it's just pretty funny, maybe I need to spend more time on the actual humor and saying something significant and less time on the animation itself... shorter videos, too

    3. So, yeah, there's the technical question of whether its good enough...

    4. Timely... it needs to be at 'THE' right time... my video was launched 80% of the way through the contest... if I was prepared, I think I could toss it together in 48 hrs and then may be I could have gotten more traction.

    5. Compounding/stacking social resources... it almost needs to be a very organized plan of attack that includes not only FB but also planned Twitter blasts from multiple accounts, Youtube and other video sites... Fiverr, hitting up forums and FB groups, etc etc... really I bet there are 100 sources.

What might be cool would be to create an SENuke type tool... maybe VIRALNuke That would shotgun your thing out and create a viral effect, haha... somebody, get on it, lol.

    6. There may be an issue of the 'who' behind the project??? People don't trust. I spoke with Couch Surfing Ori about it and he's all about getting involved and playing the front man on something like this. Because he has that personality of 'he's a bit crazy and can say and do anything and people just laugh and never take him too seriously or as a threat', I am wondering if having a super star like him acting as a catalyst might be a good idea...

Or, it may just be that true viral episodes are more like natural phenomenon. You can try to setup the circumstances to make something 'real' happen... to 'trigger' it but, it's hard to do that. Really hard. Because, you can't fake innocence. If I am playing an angle, people see it.

I guess, I figured if I was adding something cool/unique/clever/funny/entertaining to the community, it would be shared naturally. It makes me wonder if it were just being done totally without some intention of winning some van (which I really couldn't care less about anyway), maybe people would have more fun with it... (the innocence thing).

Whereas I do have a large list... I could exploit if I wish, I've spent years developing ideas that lift me up to higher levels against the odds. So, I think exploring what makes something go viral is a viable place to waste time

If I do discover some cool secrets along the way, I'll be happy to share them with you all here. Thanks for all your advice. It think this contest is almost over. If anyone has any last minute super awesome ideas to throw my way, please do. In the meantime, thanks everyone for your amazing advice and support!
