New process for getting product reviews

As has been noted, the product review request situation has led to some serious flooding of places that don't benefit from it. Add in the fact that a big chunk of the people posting them have used them as WSO pre-selling systems, and you've got an abuse problem.

Here's the new process:

1. Product review requests should be posted in the Wanted - Members Looking To Hire You section.

2. All review request thread titles must start with the tag [Reviewers wanted].

3. You may ask potential reviewers to contact you via any combination of the following: Post in the thread, PM you, or send you an email. No outbound links (other than an email address) may be included in the body of the request, and you must close your thread prior to posting a WSO for the product being reviewed.

In short, don't try to use this as a pre-selling system for an upcoming WSO.

4. Product creators may put whatever qualifying criteria they wish on potential reviewers. Must have X posts, must have been a member for Y amount of time, first name must begin and end with a vowel... whatever. If you do not meet those criteria, don't ask for a review copy of the product.

5. Critiques should be sent via whatever method the product creator specifies. Don't ask for a copy if you aren't going to actually review it and provide feedback. "Cool stuff" is not feedback.

This same process may be used to find beta-testers for new sites and software.

--- End official part ----

I know this isn't perfect, but it's closer than the way we've been doing things to this point. We are not going to add a separate section for review requests, as it would quickly become a mess. Too many people will abuse any free advertising they can find in any way they can get away with, as we've been reminded in the MMO and JV sections lately.

The best way to get traffic to your requests is probably going to be a link in your signature. Please don't start posting "Look at my sig" for this.

I just posted mine a few hours ago in the JV section
(as suggested by some senior members).

Do I need to close it down and create a new one?

What about the "Review my website" posts too Paul?
These are just being posted on the main forum to gain traffic
to their sites in most cases.

      Les,
What about the "Review my website" posts too Paul?
Depends on the topic. If we believe it's a legitimate request for help, it will survive. If it looks like a sneaky traffic approach, we'll nuke it.

Judgement call. Part of the process.

          Les,

Depends on which aspect of the site they're looking for critique on. Could be site design, sure. Could also be copy, or sales funnel, or product, or... Pretty much anything.

If it looks like pre-promotion, we'll nuke it. Or if it's in the wrong section, or...

Review requests outside the rules listed above won't get much leeway.

Better than the way it's been done to date. Question. Does this affect in any way the two-tier pricing that some have used, with a lower price for people who purchase and leave a review?

Some of these are really legitimate newbie questions and they get some very constructive feedback on their sites. The traffic they get is short lived so it really shouldn't be considered as a viable traffic source. There's the occasional questionable jackmonkey who thinks he's going to make sales by making us look, but my feeling is that most are people who are launching their first sites and just need someone to tell them if it's ok or what they should change.

Nope. That's a marketing decision, and it's completely transparent. There's no need for us to get involved in that.

I doubt most of the sellers expect that to be the cause of much in the way of reviews. It's more likely they're looking at the increased sales from folks who want a deal.

Seems like a sensible solution. I agree they do all need to be in one place and by putting them in a section of the forum where people will have to pay to ask for reviews it will get rid of some of the nuisance threads.

I have a couple of quick questions though:

    1. This rule applies not only to WSO's but ALL product reviews, correct? Anything that someone is planning on selling for money, whether it be a product or service, whether it will be sold on this forum or not?

    2. This is only for reviews BEFORE a product has launched? Can someone still do this if they have already launched a product and are looking for some feedback because of slow sales?

    3. Do you think this will increase the amount of 'behind the scenes' PM's now from people looking for product reviews? I hope not!

      Will,

      Yep. ALL reviews.

Nope. Any time they want feedback. Note that the word used is review, not testimonial.

We don't get into what people send to each other via PM.

I only asked because of this line from the new rules...

"you must close your thread prior to posting a WSO link for the product being reviewed."

Just want it to be clear because we know how much people around here love looking for loopholes

    Sorry. Good point.

Yes, you can request reviews for products that are not and never will be sold here as WSO's.

I recently posted in the JV section as I was unable to find clear instruction on where I should have posted, I found several conflicting directions/opinions, and was told by some that "that's where everyone does it".

I publicly apologize if I was in error. On a forum this large, it's not always easy to find the info you need. Thank you very much for the clarification, and your rule sounds very reasonable.

    Hi Paul,
Curious to why the Wanted - Members Looking To Hire You section was used for this
when the Internet Marketing Product Reviews & Ratings section exists?

Was it because of the word "Wanted"?

Thanks Paul for this alternative, often I don't know, what is the best possible ways to ask for review in WF.
Thus, ending me up posting a thread at Warrior Joint Ventures

IMHO, this thread must be at Warrior Joint Ventures, so that everyone there will noticed about this new rules.

I myself as example, come across this thread by accident when browsing Main Internet Marketing Discussion Forum.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Regards;

Maybe we could benefit from a new forum category specifically for reviews, it could also then have subsections like product reviews and web site reviews.

I don't know the ins and outs of creating a forum but this could be a good option.

    Regards,
    Stephen.

We were telling people to use the reviews section, but it got out of hand, and it's not really what that section is for. That's for existing products, and these were chasing people away.

      Stephen,

As I mentioned in the first post, that's not a practical option. It would become a real mess, fast.

That's a nice gesture of the forum, but I have to ask...

What's the problem with people doing it the old way? You know, creating a relationship with others and people on this forum first and then ask maybe 2 or 3 of your trusted Warrior friends to review it for you. Although that would not guarantee you a review .. only if it were worthy.

These rules do not stop people requesting reviews from their trusted Warrior friends via PM. This is to stop all those other people who do NOT have any 'friends' they can ask for reviews and are left to do it publicly.

Besides, the best and most honest reviews are going to be from people you do not know.

Thank you, Paul. This makes my job as a moderator of the Reviews section easier. Ken and I have to deal with so many scammers, cheats and frauds on a daily basis and it all relies on our judgement. I've always found these requests for reviews to be particularly difficult to judge and I'm glad they have gone.

That word "link" created a bit of confusion, I think. I've removed it from the original.

Basically, if you ask for reviews using this process, you must close the thread before posting the product for sale as a WSO. That will mostly prevent people from using the review request as a WSO pre-sell.
