Hi all thanks for the quick replies in the other post. Here is where i am so far anyway.

34, married, 2 children. life went wrong financially around 2-3 years ago, lost house and all that, same as lots of people, and was looking at ways to make money. Found 30 day challenge from ed dale and followed his course, that got me hooked. I didnt actually make a sale and was a bit disheartened, until i found that i wasnt looking in the right places to check if i had a sale or not - i was expecting emails or something, doh! Anyway this was around 6 months later and i had racked up maybe 10-20 sales -we are talking a matter of pounds in profit rather than hundreds, but made me happy none the less. During the challenge i realised that i was clueless with all things web-related and went back to school to learn it all. Now soon to be a second year of a foundation degree in new media and design - unfortunately it hasnt really touched on web design. It has kept me busy though and i have been reassuring myself that the skills i am learning will be of benefit. In the last few weeks i have tried to learn dreamweaver - my portfolio is half completed but it shows what skills i may or may not have. Im not too worried, in my eyes i have 1 more year to get that up to scratch if i want to work as a web designer . ASC Digital Media Services is my portfolio, think ive loaded some pages wrong at the server end, and some of it is poor - but it is a learning site! And if anyone looks at the animation page, i apologise for both the accent (hate hearing myself recorded!!) and the work. Once the site is sorted out, i can improve the topics individually.
As said i was learning SEO from Ed dale and found all that massively interesting, but not even touched on our course, with most of the tutors looking strangely when i ask about this...
At the time - around 2 years ago, i bought a few domains and tried to rank well with the keywords - now in hindsight im worried my keyword research was a load of rubbish and ive ranked ok for rubbish words!

My sites - managinganxiety.co.uk (i am/was a nurse so chose something i knew about) - i tried to rank for keyword 'managing anxiety' - and did that with some link building and content heavy words - the site now has been sitting there doing not much, i dont have much stuff on there for sale - this is one of the reasons im asking here really - is there any point. apart from experience is there any reason to build on this, or would it like be flogging a dead horse as the keyword choice is poor? PLEASE dont judge this site on looks - i made some buttons you will see on the front page, i know they look wrong but it was practice for me in making a button in photoshop and adding the images etc. It gets around 5-20 visitors per day, and makes around 1-2 sales per month, of books via amazon, so not much really.

Scroll Saw Blades - as per above, practice, not done anything in a year - aimed for keyword 'scrollsaw blades' think it is 1 in google, but doesnt get searched much. 15-20 visitors per day, 1-5 sales per month.

Link building - other than joining forums and adding a signature, i havent a clue how to do this.

I am now at a junction where i want to channel my energies into something decent. I strongly believe in IM and that it can be made successful, even though in the total time i might have made around 40 pounds, but spent on hosting and domain etc, so not even broke even. I am putting my energies towards learning to make sites, with a view to offer to build for people at the end of my academic course. But i really want to use my skills for IM. My goal is not to be an internet marketer, or to be a web designer but simply fuelled by being able to try and provide for my family, who are growing up fast! That is my motivation and anything i can learn or work towards, that would definately be my motivation.

Well here i am and really could do with someone saying, hey dont waste your time on those sites as the keywords are just wrong, or build on them, look for other ways of..... just some guidance really.

Thanks for taking (all!!) the time reading this and look forward to hearing any responses!

Alan

    asc,

I think there is definitely room for you to expand on these sites, particularly your anxiety site. There are plenty of other keywords you can use related to "anxiety". Start adding pages targeting each of these keywords, then focus on moving those pages up in the rankings. This should increase your visitor count and ultimately your sales.

Your scroll saw blade site might be a little more limiting, but you could still add review pages for different brands and models of blades or saws for that matter.

If you don't mind venturing out toward the fringe, there is a lot of "new age" relaxation material out there meditation music and sound effect recordings, hypnosis and probably some herb recipes too. Perhaps for an added alternative medicine section. I'm sure all these materials can be found on clickbank.

If you don't sweat the domain keyword word much (I have heard Google is discounting their effect) and just expand on your central topic you might make search matches for additional keywords based on content.

Thanks for the reply. So you think that the anxiety site might be worth building on? Also although my design skills are beginner, is this something i should be looking at utilising? Logo design for example, will it help with getting the sites convert more? I have considered remaking the wordpress blogs within dreamweaver, for flexibility if anything. Any thoughts there? other domains i have are www.electricguitarandamp.co.uk - very little content and laying dormant, again i used it as a tool to practice getting graphics online before i learned how to publish via dreamweaver. Again the flash work, is it worth time to make flash banners, and use them within dreamweaver?
Or maybe think less of the graphic presentation and focus on learning more about seo, getting visitors and getting them to convert?

I think web design seems a far cry away from effective sites that convert well, and not sure where to channel my energies. Web design as ill actually see money when i eventually get clients, but IM for the longer term?

Once ive decided on a plan of action, ie just focus on one site, i would really like to post up updates of stats etc, and try and crack this once and for all!

Thanks for the replies so far again!

"anxiety" is a beautiful niche because it can often be caused out of money or health uncertainity which both are HUGE niches!

Ok thanks, ill get into it. I shall make a plan of action, and if that is ok, ill post it here and see what people think with regard to this site. If this is fine, id like to discuss most steps, as although im aware of some of the steps to make it work, im not really sure if the processes of the steps if that makes sense. And hopefully this might help some others here too!

Ill get back with a plan asap to revive my anxiety site!

    Hey Alan...

Try this keyword tool from Tim Godfrey & Steve Clayton...

    www(.)getima(.)org/IMAgo/

When you click OFF this page you will get a prompt to LEAVE or STAY on the page...

Stay on the page and you will get the keyword tool and a backlink tool in exchange for your email address.

I have been using this tool for a couple of years and recommend it highly!

HI, thanks for the reply and ill check out that tool. i actually bought software, market samurai, a while back but havent used it since getting first domains and trying to sort out keyword research. They have 'golden rules' but searching for related keywords to 'managing anxiety' doesnt bring any searches back. I think i need to go to market samurai videos again for a refresher...

    Thanks
