Hello! I was looking for a domain name tonight and just for fun, I typed in a name that I was sure would be taken . It looks like it was first registered in 2002. It expired in October 2008 and for some very odd reason it was available. Of course I snatched it up. I was going to use it, but I think I could probably make immediate money if I sold it. What is the best place to do this? Sitepoint, Sedo? I don't have any content on the site, actually, there's no site built just yet, its just a domain name. Is it necessary for me to add content first. Id like to sell it as fast as possible. Thanks in advance ! Ann |

Thank you! I hadn't even considered that one. If I add content, how long do you think I need to hold on to it before selling?

You can hold onto it until you have some traffic to show or until you have better Google PageRank or Alexa rank. If you want quick money though, holding it for a month should be sufficient, especially if you are going to be adding fresh contents within that 1 month. By the end of 1 month, you will have decent organic traffic, which will also determine the final price of your domain and site. |

Sitepoint, Namepros.com, dnforum and of course eBay! Add fresh, unique content and build backlinks to it.

Get it tuned up by driving hoards of traffic to it. Sell it off later for good money.

If the domain is valuable, adding content will probably not make much difference to the price. In fact, it may even devalue it in the eyes of potential buyers as it may limit what they want to do with it later on.

What can I say is a valuable domain? Is a brand new domain included?

Can you say what the domain is? Since you own it already, I don't see the harm in revealing it. I'm asking because most people tend to overvalue their domain names. As a general rule of thumb, unless your domain name is a single word dictionary .com domain name or a 3 character .com domain name, there is no set value for your domain name. For example, I own the domain ComputerWebmaster.com. Most people who're new to domaining would value that domain at 1K+. In reality, I know it'll only go for about $100. I recently sold PreventHomeLoss.com. Again, a lot of people would say that's a premium domain name. Again, I sold it for under $100. Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining. I reg the domains for $7 and sell them for $10-$100 and move dozens of domains a week. It's pretty good money. All I'm saying is most people way, way overvalue their domain names. Unless you're selling your domain name to an end user, it's very rare you'll get more than $200 for a name. In other words, if you have a name and post it on NamePros, eBay or Sitepoint, it's very rare that you'll get more than $200 for it unless it really is a premium name. (ie. 3 character name or dictionary name.) On the other hand, if you sell to end users, you can make a lot more for the name, but it takes time and a lot of effort. For example, if I wanted to sell ComputerWebmaster for 5K instead of $100, I probably could - It might just take a lot of marketing and a year before I actually move the domain. I'd rather move 40 domains a week at $10-$100 than try and shoot for a 5K domain for months without seeing results, personally. Anyway - If you're willing to post the name, I can give you a more accurate valuation of the domain based on my opinion. Cheers, - Derek |
