Can I "force" my market towards a membership site?

Sorry for the provocative-sounding title. Here's my situation:

In researching my niche, I've found that most of the competing products are one-time downloads (video/ebook/audio) or physical products (DVDs, CDs, books). Thinking about my bottom line, however, I'm very interested in creating a membership site instead, which would offer the electronic items above, behind a pay-wall.

I know I'm not providing any more details, but given what I've said so far, can you give me your thoughts on what the thinking process should be from here, in trying to assess whether a membership site could be made to work?

The first question in my mind is this....what else is behind the membership besides downloadable products? Anything?

If not, then what is the benefit for you or the user? If that's all it is, then don't force the user to login to yet another website........

If capturing contact info is your goal, just use an email capture inbetween your customer and your downloads.

I've tried a similar concept in the past, trying to convert a market dominated by single purchases by starting a membership website.

There is a few things to research and review though:

    1. You might not be the first person to have this idea, maybe nobody does it becuase it won't work?

    2. Try and find out if anybody has done it before and what were the results.

    3. Can you clearly communicate to your potential customers why a membership would be better than a single purchase?

If you answered all those questions honestly and you still feel confident about it, then yeah I would say you can force your market towards a membership site.

If you haven't seen this thread about membership sites, it's a good place to start:

It would all depend on what the user would be getting for there money i.e a certain ammount of downloads per day, week or month.

You need to offer them something to keep them and give them a reason to stay such as if you were selling PLR products monthly offer them web hosting with the downloads that way if they build sites on your howsting they will end up staying longer.

Membership sites work well, but only if the value proposition is there. Otherwise why pay monthly?

      Agreed.

You must provide continuous "VALUE" to your members every now and then to hold them back to membership.
