How to make a site go viral?

Hi,
I have a new website which is a directory of 100 top business book summaries and author's commentaries: 100 Must Reads Business Books

It is set up as a membership site, so you log in and get access to the 100 books and their summaries.

Our goal is not only sales but to build a list, so we are selling the membership for just $9.97 TOTAL.

We just released it last week and a couple of tweets and we've already sold a few memberships!

My question is how to make it go viral. We encourage everyone who buys to sign up as an affiliate and tweet to earn back their 10 bucks with 2 friends (50% commission for affiliates).

Can anyone give me an idea of a good social media tactic to spread the word? I'm building a twitter account for it and have a FB page.

Thanks!
Kevin

Affiliate program for your business is one great method. The second thing you should be thinking about is getting your site on top of the serp for your various keywords. Secondly, do list building.

Thanks John. There's no real keywords we are going for which is why we are thinking viral social media campaign would be best. "Business books" or "book summaries" are just too competitive. We're building the list with customers, since it is only $9.97 instead of doing the typical method of getting subscribers and turning them into customers.

      Cheers,
      Kevin

No offense, but when I think of viral, I think of the eHarmony cat lady or the double rainbow guy. The Old Spice guy even.

I don't think of a business book directory when I think of viral.

Things that get lucky enough to go viral are usually funny, stupid and entertaining.

Not knocking your site, just questioning if going viral is possible with it. Would love to see you do it though.

Not sure what you mean. I think "viral" is subjective. We don't need 32 million views. We just need people to recommend it to their friends. Boring topics can even go viral with the right strategy. Getting 100 summaries for 10 bucks is pretty cool, not sexy and exciting, but pretty easy to pass along especially as an affiliate. Everyone wants business knowledge but nobody has time. It seems like a no-brainer to me but I don't know what would best get it out there.

          Cheers,
          Kevin

I know you say the keywords you are thinking of are way too competitive but I am sure there are other longer tailed keywords that you could rank for much easier. I would pick a few that have enough traffic and arent as competitive and rank for those.
