Is Google+ Dying a Slow Death

No - I don't have any article to link to... it's just a gut feeling.

I'm currently thinking about Google+ about as often as I ever thought about LinkedIn.

Anyone else felt that vibe or otherwise?

It just debuted. And its still growing. Let's put it this way.

I had a Facebook account in college back in 2005. That was when you could only join if you had a .edu email address. Yep that's right. And now look at it. It's the most popular website in the entire world.

Things take time. A social networking platform that has the most successful internet Goliath behind it? Yeah I don't see that dying anytime soon.

Isn't Google+ just an extension of that? And I'd rather be someone who took a chance and fell on his face than someone who didn't take a chance at all.

GoogleBuzz probably cost them a ton of money. A ton of money they plan on making back when they make Google Adwords run on Google+

I think Google+ doesn't give anything substantial that Facebook doesn't offer, and so why would I go to the effort of maintaining two social networks?

I therefore think Google+ as it is now will die, but if they do something revolutionary, then it could be a Facebook destroyer.

    Circles are not revolutionary :-)

This isn't true for photographers. The integration between Picasa and G+, the photo viewer, and the fact that they retain your metadata are all killer features for us. There are a couple thousand very high-end photographers on G+ today, and that population is growing quickly.

For a while they were really limiting new signups, which was expected because it was a limited field trial. They can't just let 200 million people in all at once. They need to be able to handle the growing pains as they happen.

    Heidi,

A lot of business professionals see LinkedIn as more relevant to their needs than Facebook et al. Maybe because it's harder to spam than Facebook and Twitter is the reason why it's not so popular in IM circles.

I can see that "Social Media Fatigue" and inertia might make people shy away from Google+ but I think it does have a lot of possibilities.

Maybe we'll see this business model in the future:

Facebook for spamming, Google+ for building targeted relationships.

The big thing that G+ has going for them is that they listen to what their users want. Facebook, on the other hand, just does whatever they think the user wants, which most of the time turns out to be 100% wrong.

They are just using different names for the functions. What is 'Friends' on Facebook is 'Circles' in G+. Do you find anything in G+ which is NOT available at Facebook?

Circles are a little bit different than "friends". Circling someone is more like following someone on Twitter. They don't have to circle you back. On FB, they have to approve the friendship.

Also, like I said... Hangouts. 10 people in a live video conference. Facebook doesn't have that. They have their skype thing, but it's not on the level of Hangouts, which G+ released first.

Also, the biggest thing I mentioned... customer service! FB's customer service is horrible. Google employees, including higher ups like Senior VP's, have active presences on Google Plus and are always interacting with people, asking questions, listening to concerns, etc.

When was the last time you saw a Facebook employee do something like that?

Also, G+'s feedback feature blows ANY other site's feedback feature out of the water, not just Facebook's.

I prefer Google+ over Facebook. People are saying Google is arrogant, but both of them are so it doesn't make a difference. The only difference is Google+ has less people and is still on trial mode compared to Facebook which is open to everyone.

Its a little hard to call it at this point, but one thing I do know is this.

My friends on Facebook, none of which are technically minded, nor marketers, couldn't give a rats ass about Google+

As its already been said, unless Google+ offers something of substantial difference to that of Facebook, then I see little reason for people to shift. Especially when they have dozens, if not hundreds of friends, and photos already listed there.

I have a G+ account myself, and I think Ive logged in about half a dozen times. Its quiet in there, you can hear the crickets.

But LinkedIn is still around and doing great, right? I don't see that as the best example, regardless of how much YOU think about it (sorry don't mean to shout, just for emphasis).

Nothing is everything for everybody, so it could just be you.

I know some people who don't use Facebook for anything but it's still a powerful force in online business, right?

Just because you don't think about it doesn't mean it's not going to be big.

I don't think things move that fast in the internet world, for it to already start dying a slow death, right? ha ha. If you think about it that way, then every business is dying a slow death from the moment it starts as everything has to end, eventually.

In fact, from the moment we're all born we all start dying a slow death! Hmmm, sorry for such sad sentiments, ha ha.

But, back to the point, let's give it a year before saying it's dead, aye? It's still a project/beta/limited field trial mode.

Long way to go yet in this product, for google's team on this...

    Hey guys,

I sat down with a Google executive today. (one of the perks of one of my uber huge clients) and we did some talking, and some Googling...listen, Google is about BUSINESS. Businesses who advertise is BIG money for Google. What they are doing is simply catering to huge businesses that give them MILLIONS in advertising. When Google+ for business launch, you will see some MAJOR players jumping at the chance to get their profiles set up. Why?

Well my dear Warrior friends...as your Google+ circles grow, and activity on your profile grows, and your +1's begin to add up...guess who will LOVE you? Google search...that's who...this activity will be largely MARRIED to the search engines...*cough* ummmm...any internet marketers out there? If you make ANY money from Google search, you are out of your mind not to be digging into Google+ tooth and nail. You can watch the rollercoaster from afar and make whatever predictions you want, but for me, I am jumping aboard and seeing where it takes me.

I saw a rebuttal blog comment elsewhere on this issue, by someone saying for some "Internet marketing" pages there are more G+ likes than Facebook likes, so G+ must be doing fine.

More likely, someone BOUGHT a bunch of G+ clicks for the IM page.

I do not believe it is possible for anything to die "a slow death" two months after its release.

Well, you invited me, (thanx), it is I who not been active on it as I am waiting to see if & when the other shoe drops. Lol.

IF Google adds 'Pages' or Groups, (I never have understood the difference between the two other than Groups asks if they can access your entire life to use), or mini sites that are business friendly. (We already know they will NOT be **** Berry, IM, Dating, or Weight Loss friendly), AND rank those pages/sites over FB's... then they stand a good chance of becoming useful to a lot of people that sell on line.

(& There are a ton! For example, in Breast Cancer alone, I know of 150+ people selling everything from recipes to pajamas to mittens! Few if any of whom are members here. I imagine every niche has the same.)

Yes, it is now. Back around 2007-2008 though Facebook didn't really have much to offer, when MySpace was top dog (other than the lack of animated GIFs and glittery pages, which was definitely a plus over MySpace). Facebook had to evolve into what it is today. I'm betting that G+ will also evolve into something better than its current incarnation, although pound-for-pound, I think G+ is already better than Facebook, but that's just my opinion.

I think Google+ is an experiment, right now depending on how user response is they might take it further, but the plan is to always use the power of social media to decide rankings, which would thwart the efforts of those trying to circumvent their algorithms

Facebook is still where most users are still comfortable. That will not change anytime soon. Facebook I'm sure will integrate circles, etc to compete. Google+ may give them a run for their money but in the end, Google just doesn't do social well.

The only way I feel Google would take the lead is if Facebook just became overridden with spam like what happened to Myspace. In this case, the users would naturally seek a new spam-free place to connect.

i highly doubt google cares about their current signup rate or they would likely take it out of beta and allow everyone to signup without an invite. They know theyll get plenty of people signing up, similar to gmail which took ages to leave beta and still took off. The big question is will people use it, i would think those most likely to use google+ are those currently heavily using facebook, and how likely are they to leave facebook for google+ and on that note will they use both?

Well - Thanks for all the responses. I actually forgot to subscribe to this thread - so it was fun reading everyone's comments for the first time today.

I'm still getting people adding me every day to Google+ - probably because of this thread:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/local-me...r-circles.html

I also noticed recently that email notifications now show pictures of people and summarized comments.

(an attempt, no doubt, to lure us back in....)

It's worked once or twice on me - but only for a few seconds.

I may go to my 'circle' of 174 Internet Marketing Friends (or whatever the number is) to ask for advice on a technical issue. I bet I'll get a ton of responses.

I should do a case study - ask the same question here - at the same time - and compare the results.

    Now that would be interesting.

I love the idea of being able to divide people into circles - and having as many circles as you want. Like you said, you could get quick responses in just about any niche if you have it set up right.

Right now Google has a lot of leverage if they use it right. Webmasters will jump through any hoop google gives them if they find out it effects their SEO score. This could be huge for getting website to integrate google plus.

I just did my ASK FOR HELP post at Google+ (I didn't do one here) .... I'll go see if anyone responded. One nice thing about Google+ is you don't have to go into the system to share - it's on my gmail tool-bar.

One thing you have to remember though, is that those people have to have you in their circle as well in order for them to see your post.

    Nothing yet...(5 min later...)

but I did find out that a Anti-Gay Senator got busted asking for 'gay sex' at a hotel and that there's a scandal about insider trading at prior to the downgrade.

In that sense - G+ reminds me more of Twitter than Facebook - except it's visual like Facebook. Some heavy users just try to post something interesting and newsworthy every 3 minutes.

They either have no life - or they've got some auto post system already figured out.

But it's working for them - if getting lots of Circle Friends -is the goal.

The difference between Google+ and linkedin is google's vast capital that it has over linkedin.

The internet is still expanding and google will not be left behind.

I just think the benefit of google+ is the compatibility with all of your other google products add that to the fact that they are currently much less cluttered and have a more elegant design. I think that will matter a lot more than people think...

That's the benefit to Google from a data mining perspective.

After spending a few minutes in G+ again - I noticed something that kinda surprises me.

After the big 'banning of accounts' fiasco last month - I thought it would be difficult for people to 'pitch' products and get away with it.

        But nooooooo.....

Plenty of shares from fellow Warriors outright pitching WSO's, Fiverr promotions, etc.

    Hey,

One fact is known to everyone that Google+ cannot takeover Facebook and that not because I am saying or something but Facebook is just awesome and it truly deserves to be where it is. But yes this is also true that Google+ is not dying a slow death, though it may close in coming recent future. The reason of Facebook being at top are the features and the way it gets updated is very different. Most of the updates of Facebook is aimed at helping Internet Marketering and at these all things Google+ lacks. As per my experience and knowledge I don't think that in coming ten years any social network can overtake Facebook.
