Counterfeit USPO Money Orders

I was in the Post Office yesterday when a fellow brought in two US Post Office Money Orders. They were for almost $1,000 each, and they were counterfeit.

He was there to give the Money Orders (along with the email info of the person who sent the bogus MOs) to the Post Office for the Postal Inspector.

I ask where they came from and why someone set the MOs to him. He did some online work for an IMer who claimed to be in Canada. How someone from another country would send MOs from the USPO is beyond me - unless the MOs were counterfeit.

These counterfeit MOs were well made. The Post Office employee working at the counter, opened a book of real MOs, and the color was just a little bit more intense.

Amazing! Be cautious.

Crazy! Sucks for that gentleman, but I trust it'll even out in the long run...

      Wow. What a scam.

Well, even more reason to deal with people locally.

    Hello Don:

Thanks for the advice to everyone. When I worked at a major US Bank in the Fraud Department, we would see hundreds of counterfeit USPS Money Orders, Western Union, Walmart Money Orders, on and on. More or less, if it is a money order and I don't know the person sending it to me I don't trust it. Oftentimes, if you are attempting to deposit the fraudulent check into the bank, you will be accused as the counterfeiter, and they will close your checking account. Possibly call the cops. Good luck opening another one after that.

Postal Orders and Western Union are the worst. When depositing at the bank, be very clear that they were sent to you to buy something and that you want the bank to check them out. Also, NEVER deposit a possible counterfeit in the ATM machine. The bank will simply assume you are the fraudster.
