I would like to start an online business and need some advice/ideas. I was also considering starting a directory - I heard that was a good place to begin.

Thank you in advance.

Leshok - there is alot to learn regarding online businesses. As 0oo0 said, unless you have a good savings stash you should think about getting a job whilst you are learning the ropes. Sorry, but that's the reality of it.

Starting an internet business with serious resources of special skills and experience is a high risk undertaking, despite what all the training sales pages tell you.

There are freelance marketplaces mainly for designers and programmers but there are jobs for writers and virtual assistants, this is probably a safer investment of time than most get rich offers, with global competition pay rates can be pretty low, but a native English speaker has an advantage.

Honestly, this is not get rich quick so it will take a while for you to make decent money that you can actually live on. I would advise you to get a day job and work your internet business part time until you are making enough money to replace your income, otherwise the desperation will frustrate you into giving up.

Like others said creating an online business with a consistent income flow will take a while. You are going to need to have some cash reserves. Settle in on one method and don't jump from method to method.

You can't just "start a directory" and plan on it making enough money to support you right away, if ever, unless you learn all about what you need to do first. Proper SEO, traffic, and the million other things you need to know how to handle. Don't forget that Google's Panda just recently hit most of the directories hard...even the ones with higher page rank -- and they really tightened up their rules on contributors. Can you write for the internet and promote so you get traffic?

You would be much better off to find another job while you learn all that is necessary for the direction online you want to take. Besides that, if you receive unemployment and/or other benefits, there might be rules against starting your own business. Stupid rules, but nevertheless, be absolutely certain if you might be subject to anything like that before you start IM.

You first need to find a hungry target audience that needs help. Then you design or find a product to help them. Starting with a product and then looking for your audience is a recipe for failure.

  • I would build a system around a passion you have, and create this system to deliver value to others

Think building a pipeline instead of just hauling buckets

Its also a good time to hone in on yourself, your passions, interests, motivations etc

Think of the word that pops into your head when you think of your highest desire, repeat that word throughout the day to stay focused and motivated

If you are unemployed then I'd advise you to look for a job but when you have free time you can do IM on the side and make money online, so until you've made the income online you've wanted then you can quit your job for good.

Why should he get a job? If you are going to approach this as a serious business, why should it differ from being being a self employed designer, or opening up a pet shop... or any other business?

Just do it properly - create a business plan, apply for funding, set targets, never stop learning, deploy all you know...

Please let me know when you are heading up to the bank to apply for funding to start your directory website. I can't wait to see the look on their faces. Priceless.

Seriously though, a casual job is not going to hurt. It can actually be a good thing. Not only will it bring in some income it will also free up time to do your IM stuff. If you manage to pick a casual job you hate then even better. This should give you the motivation to get things going asap.

so nobody has ever built up a business full-time from nothing? are you telling me that everybody who has built up a business has done it on a part-time basis?

of course not. clearly, you are still in the camp that believes any money-making activities you do online requires only passive maintenance. well that's not a proper business - it's a hobby that makes pocket money.

should the OP decide to take a serious approach - perhaps by designing a large and valuable website which can be expanded to sell advertising space or memberships - THIS is a real business proposition and a demonstrates serious business intent. this is a NOT part-time endeavour.

if of course the OP is looking for a quick fix because "it's easy to make money online" then yes - GET A JOB. otherwise, define something great to work at...

The only thing I know of to suggest if you don't have any money would be to sell on eBay. At least with that you can get money quickly and then move on to other things. But starting an online biz takes time and money... and some knowledge.

For starting out online, just make sure you have another source of income while starting out. If you are broke and resorting to the internet to make you money, then I would suggest getting a offline job some place, at least a part time one, that way you are not stressed financially and have some spare money to invest in online.

It can be hard getting your foot in the door, but it's a very rewarding market to be in and I would suggest it to ANYONE.

I'm in a country where I can't work because I'm on a dependent visa. My husband is a student. We were desperate!! If I had to listen to most of the advice here, we would have starved. I am making money online as a freelance writer. Look for something you are good with and diligently research how you can turn that into cash.

I agree with all those who say you should not waste the free time you have. You can earn a living online even as a newbie. You just need courage and determination!

Take a skill you have if you can create webpages, copyrighting etc etc go offline and find some local businesses to hire you while you get other things going, its all about multitasking and not having all eggs in one basket especially if you are desperate

How much startup money do you have? If you have a couple hundred bucks, then I would invest in 1-2 article networks, start a few sites based around low competition keywords, and make sure that you are monetizing them with decent products. You should be able to make $1-2k+ in a few months if you stick to it and build out your network of sites. Also, try amazon associates because it's pretty easy to sell most products through there.

But if you don't have any money whatsoever that you are willing to invest, then go with bum marketing. Travis Saigo (think that is how it is spelled) is a good source for free info.

You're going to need money to invest in programs, softwares and etc to fully dedicate yourself and your resources to IM. I think it would be a good idea to get a full time job and solid income and slowly start IM as a part time thing to ease into it.

Link wheels do not work google has them on there knees. But link magnets work wonders. GO to sean donahoes website imsuccesscenter.com and look up link magnets.

Sean Donahoe is a master at link magnets and any site using this method will gain ranking fast.

Also fiverr is a start but it is also a keeper for more traffic to your site.

I see a couple people recommending Fiverr. It was, or at least for me, a slow way to make money as a provider there. Sure you can make a few bucks on there but you'll make more on the backend offering them a report or affiliate products. Though you need to be careful how you go about this.

I've found when I needed money my time was better spent marketing my online services to offline businesses. Or even offer your services here on the Warrior Fourm in the Warriors for Hire section. Business owners always need someone to do something for them- online and offline.

Start an online bank. Model it after the fractional reserve banking system. 10% required in deposits allows you to create 9X that amount out of thin air, and then you can start giving out loans and collecting interest on money that never existed in the first place! LOL

I understand how hard jobs can be in today's economy, but the reality of it, you need to at least find a temp job through an agency, or if it comes down to it, (gag!) fast food. I hate to sound negative here, but starting an internet business is not exactly free.
You still have to pay for internet access (unless you want to sit in the parking lot of Comfort Inn and tap into their wireless on your laptop.. j/k), and electricity to power your computer.
Not to mention food, rent, ect.
You did not mention if you had any money saved up, but if you do, then that is great.
You could start by offering your services on freelance websites, fiverr, craigslist, kijiji, ect. would be where I would start if I had to start over.
    Good luck to you!

Joining or starting an online business is never an instant money earning method. You can't just decide to join the Internet Marketing business and instantly, will be earning some money. There is a lot to learn about the IM business before you could say that you will be earning. Try to search around and study the basics of what to do and how to do in this IM business. I would suggest, try to earn some money by writing some articles, and from that earning, save that and used that after you have already mastered the basics of the Internet Marketing.
