Life after fiver for those providing a service.

Hey guys, just wanted to give back to the forum. I'm a video producer with 10 years of broadcast tv experience. I was let go from my job a few months ago with little to no warning and I'm scrambling to make it all work. Here is my game plan.

I mainly create motion graphics videos, or text videos or animated videos (they go by a lot of different names) but recently with the rise of fiver especially in the IM community its been harder to get sales. Why pay alot when you can get it for cheap? Hey I understand, no harm no foul. We aren't here to debate that issue.

So what happens to those of you who are starting out when all you are earning is 5 bucks (wait 4 bucks) per job? How do you build something off of that? Well first, realize that fiver is not a career, its a stepping stone. It's a way to build up your skills and portfolio.

After you feel comfortable providing services for your clients, there are several things you can do to branch out.

1. WSOs/Work for Hire. Establishing a reputation of this forum and others, providing a great sale to warriors and posting regularly in the work for hire section will get you more sales. You should start to price your work in a more realistic range. Why? Because, you already know that if you break down your hourly time spent on your service by how much you earn on fiver, you know the candle really isn't worth the light. But you may say, why should people pay more?
  • a. self selection - some people don't trust cheap prices. They self select for quality and if you can provide it hassle free they will gladly pay.
  • b. comfort with fellow warriors/forum members vs. fiver strangers
  • c. hell they may not even know about fiver, or have been burned in the past. Just remember its a market for a cheap car and a luxury car.

2. Partnerships - find other service providers who are going places but lack the services you provide and ask them to join their team. Join several teams. This creates multiple markets for you to sell your services in. Also join up with people outside of the IM niche. There are customers out there who will pay premium prices for quality work. Yes you make have to take a hit on your profits to make more, but your getting a lot of the heavy lifting done for you. And probably making way more than you were on fiver. Make good deals on what you are willing to give your partners in exchange for your services. Don't give away the farm, but make it worth their while as well. We are all in this to make money.

4. Offer more services. Start to offer more services to your existing clients and partners. Use your list to see if they need other services that you can provide. As you learn new things while working on your own IM goals, offer those skills to your customers. Earn while you learn.

This isn't every trick in my arsenal, but its a few of the good ones, I have more ideas in the vault. But this alone has keep the lights on the last few months. Just keep thinking of new ways to apply what you know. Good luck!

    I would bet the differ.

Fiverr can be a career. Not for everyone but let us think about it. In poor countries $4 may means a lot. Go to some organizations and see in some countries you can save a child with paying $1 a day. In europe country it may not be much but again it depends on what you offer and where you offer it.

Now let us see some of the top sellers on Fiverr, some are making 200 sales a month = $800 some are doing more and some are doing none.

$800 a month is not few and can be a full time job.

I don't believe Fiverr is the best place to have a career because at one time or another Fiverr can actually cut you off with no reason, and it is over, but I would say it is a good start to market your skill or business. Many people offer services and link it to their own website where you can see their services.

I don't buy or sell on fiverr anymore, if I am looking for a service I can't get except on fiverr, I may contact the sell who own a website outside and make the deal through his website.

All I say fiverr could be a career for many companies not only individual (if you own products that sell less than $5) and for other is not even a close shot.

For me $5 may not be much but if i got nothing else to do is not bad lol

stopperr, seven gigs are not really much. If you have 10 gigs a day (Professional gig that sell). you can make easily sell 7 a day.

an example submitting a website to DMOZ or article in Ezin, marketing books, ... etc.

Also, don't forget fiverr today is doing the Gig+ more stuff. if you pay extra, If you are a top seller, then you are good to go

Some of you guys made some very good points. And some of you missed the point entirely. Again, this wasn't a condemnation of fiver. Of course if you are in a third world country it's a career, obviously I am not.

And I suppose some things I thought went without saying should have been said. Of course having a website and a list goes without saying. And of course you can use fiver to capture leads. But one thing I have learned the hard way in freelancing is that once you set a low bar on price, its very very hard to raise that price on clients. What you end up doing is having to turn over a large number of clients sometimes. Some good ones who value your work will come with you, many won't.

The point is, there are options for those who can see them. Water and horses, yah?

I'm glad I only wrote half of the stuff I was going to write.

Hi, I have done 7 gigs in under 10 minutes while taking a lunch break Heh, Heh. Yes you can but they need to be fast gigs. Like I give a huge list of real on page pr 4 and 5 links for only $5 but I fill your gig order in under a minute (truly about 30 seconds).

Those are the ones that make you money. You could do 50 gigs while sipping your morning coffee before you are even awake.

It's all about work flow, how long does it take you to make how much?

In my opinion, it's unlikely that Fiverr will start earning you thousands of dollars a month (unless you don't sleep or eat) but what it can be (and should be) used for is getting repeat purchases and building up a client base, upselling.

If the person who paid you $5 is happy with your work, and becomes a loyal customer you can easily start doing freelance work away from Fiverr, and earning significantly more money. S'all about networking!

I did three Fiverr gigs tonight, took me about an hour. Tweeting, sharing, etc. if you have a big list of followers or something, and you offer a lot, you could realistically make a hundred dollars a day there, if your gigs are fast, and people want them.

I have never been on the employee/service provider side of fiver or such freelancing sites, only the employer side. One principle reason is the profit per hour. As far as I can see fiver and the like seems like a lot of continual work to make a relatively small revenue (the only caveat to this is for those in countries where $4 can go a long way). It is not a *system* for income, rather, it is replacing a job. If you stop doing the work on fiver then you stop getting paid.

It is better to have an automated system which you can walk away from and it continues to make money. Sure it takes work and thought power to set up and automate and systemize, but I'd rather do that, and do it once.

Now, that said, I can see the benefit of using fiver to build leads to your other products, to build your 'list' (I hate that term - so dehumanising), but there would be 2 issues with even that...

    1. The list you build will be low-price bargain hunters, not high-value hunters, that is, hunters of high value. Once they have paid only $5 for something, you have set the ceiling - they are not going to pay more for the same ever again, only the same or less. Also, it is a fair assumption that that type of clientele *may* well be the penny pinching type, and not about to pay plenty to get plenty, to get high value, whatever the service or product. Maybe.

    2. If access to the right type of customer is all you are after, to then Market your higher value, higher priced services and products, it is going to be a whole lot less work to partner with someone, rather than you doing all that work to build your list. Why not find the right person/people who already have such customers in their business, partner with them and offer them as much of a commission as you possibly can per sale, in order for you to build up the vital list of high-value hunters, to which you can build up a relationship, show you are helpful and adding value, and sell them valuable services (valuable to them) on which you get a good profit margin.

And hopefully, you can automate that process too

I had a guy to me 4 banners for $5 - they were great. I would happily pay $20 a banner if he happened to stop doing fiverr and contacted me directly.

I would stay away from fiverr for those kind of services unless you're starving to death or something. You should be able to market video creation services at a reasonable price right here on the WF as WSO and/or build a site to offer same services.

Making videos for $4 is ridiculous. There are people who pay for quality. Not everyone shops at fiverr.

      Funny you should mention that.

Just the other day I had a guy contact me on Fiverr to do a product video for him. I told him I don't do that for $5. "I'll pay you whatever you want!" was his response.

I passed on it anyway -- it's not the kind of product that interests me. But if you stick to your guns on Fiverr, you could score bigger payments. My Fiverr video gig is very specific and limited, but the example vid is high-impact and it continues to bring in people who want more complex work done.

I agree. I finished a job last month, the third job for a major car manufacturer, for $2k. I'm designing a show open for a regional tv show and an animated logo for an independent film company. I won't say my work is light years beyond what fiver guys are doing, but what I did do is find the markets in which those services will sell and go after them. In fact, I deleted my website from my sig and closed my wso's. I'm retooling my site for offline work and expanding my range of offline services.

I've decided to set up a new site strictly to cater to IM video needs and to teach what I know about IM video.

Thanks for all the great feedback and conversation, I learned a lot in this thread.

For offering a higher end service I am surprised no one has mentioned elance. As a buyer of services I have had good luck with real pros on elance. If I had a skill like you (video creation) I would surely be promoting myself on elance

Fiverr is good for everyone, but one can't rely solely on it.
Yes, it can be good if you are looking for some decent cash and you've skills. But its not easy to get orders.
