The Secret of the "IM Myth" - Why you'll never make any money

You may want to pay close attention to this short post...

If you haven't realized yet, in reality there is nothing like "internet marketing" per se. What there is, is marketing as applied to the internet.

For example, giving out a free report to attract customers was talked about in "Think and grow rich", by Napoleon Hill - long before internet.

There is a myth, and you may have bought into it.

On the other hand, if you learn "MARKETING" you will be able to apply the principles to any medium - TV, mobile, internet, print, and in-person.

If you don't get this, you will suffer or at best have a very unreliable business model, that will collapse if Google or Facebook are not on your side.

That's it.

Well put, in addition.... there is no magic bullet. What you put in is what you'll get out.

Sellers were giving out samples and free info long before Mr. Hill started on his journey.

I think your missing his point.

All marketing, not just IM, is about social dynamics.

You need to know your audience, what they want, where they are, what they like, what makes them respond etc etc.

          Yeah, thanks for that...

The thing is most people will ignore this reality. One thing I've discovered is that majority of people simply don't want to succeed.

They are addicted to running a fantasy business and gambling with their money.

But well, I'm just doing my bit. If there is one person who takes what I just said, and starts applying a different strategy, that would be my good deed for the day.

i disagree and think you are just playing with words.

There is no single skill "marketing" - it's just a fuzzy word revolving around promoting products and services. No one knows it exactly, and those that know it well probably learnt through trial and error, by running "fantasy businesses" and "gambling with their money".

I say ignore words and follow your gut - ie buy products from ppl you instinctively trust - test and tweak - work a lot until something works

Very good post and to the point. Yes it is applying effective marketing techniques to the communication medium called the Internet. It still requires good traffic generation, effective copywriting and excellent follow up activities. That has been going on for years and years. It is just faster and cheaper to do it on the Internet.

But I think many people get into it and think they will instantly be successful. The good news is that marketing on the Internet has a very low barrier to entry. The bad news (if you can call it that) is that it does take a great deal of skill and dedication to make this marketing effective (just like any other medium).

When you have a serious business, you will use all the media you can. None of the "IM gurus" make their money solely online - even the ones who claim to do so.

The truth seems to be elusive. I think that's because people want to "believe".

It's like the guy who did "Supersize me" - at the end of the day, people (and I've been guilty of this as well, of course) would rather stuff themselves with poison than spend an hour cooking ( because "they don't have time").

In the dating market for instance, there is a lot of rubbish. However, it's the rubbish that's most appealing - that's why you'll find virgins who have studied PUA techniques for years, defending gurus as if their lives depended on it.

BUT when people speak the raw truth, everyone gets annoyed. This fact, by the way, is one of the key things to understand about marketing.

AND it's not faster and cheaper any more on the internet, most of the time, not for a beginner.

Wow, thanks for the words of wisdom.

I'm kidding obviously. This thread has a misleading title and is pointless.

      You are welcome.

And you're right - it's pointless saying the truth. People don't really want to hear it.

Well, I can tell you what marketing is - it's the skill of attracting people who are qualified and able to carry out the action you desire.

Follow your gut? Test and tweak until something works? How about inventing fire?

Now, testing is part of marketing, when done right. And yes, you'll make losses and mistakes.

However, to have consistent results your actions have to be systematic. You need a foundation, and you need a structure.

There is a difference between taking a calculated risk and gambling with your money.

The fact remains that most people go in with the wrong mindset - in most cases expecting something for nothing. You can pretend it's not true - this doesn't change the reality.

Now, I'm not sure where you are coming from. Here is the point - if you read a lot of books, but hardly apply anything, you business is a fantasy.

If all your knowledge of marketing is from other people's products - that's running a fantasy business.

In any case, few people are willing to face this reality. With all due respect, I believe your comment is a recipe for disaster - it's what keeps people believing a lie.

They just end up frustrated, whilst they could take a completely different approach - and succeed.
