Advice request: How to set up an affiliate program?

Thanks for reading.

I'm going to set up an affiliate program for the first time...decent product line, pretty good commission. I know almost nothing about it though, and could really use some advice about:

-Software
-Good resources and advice
-Where to go to attract affiliates
-Common pitfalls and beginner mistakes
-etc.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

    You can use a 3rd party or self-hosted.

    - Clickbank, Commission Junction, etc... are some of the 3rd party ones.

    - iDevAffiliate is a popular self hosted solution.

    You should do the homework then get feedback on the ones you think are best.

      Thanks for that - I would much prefer a self-hosted solution...ideally freeware. The technical/web/installing aspect isn't a problem.

      No problem doing the homework, but I would like to know some good places to start and some trustworthy sources. The big problem with anything IM related is there's a lot of chaff.

      The site is Wordpress, so a affiliate tracking plugin would be favourite

    Good tracking software will be the base of your program, you can demo many of them for free. Main things you want to look for in a system are:

    -Strong Features
    -A user-friendly interface
    -Customer service
    -Price

    Our affiliate network is currently on HasOffers. VERY cost-efficient but their are definitely better systems out there. Check out CAKE, LinkTrust and HitPath. (I've worked with those systems in the past they are very nice).

    Resources and Advice? Well WarriorForums got plenty of experienced people in it

    Attracting affiliates is pretty simple once you have your program set up. Contact a few affiliate networks, As an owner of one i know we're always looking for new offers to run. Hit me up in a PM if you'd like to chat about that!

    I just purchased wp-affiliate-platform after researching a number. It was inexpensive and I can install it on as many of my web sites as I like. I bought it because the same programmers also had wp-emember that would integrate with it. This way I would be able have a membership web site that affiliates could earn affiliate commissions on.

    Haven't set it up yet, so I can't tell you much more about it. I'll know more in a couple of weeks if you want to ask me again then.
