I've used InDesign and Quark to create pages. They're both graphic design software, so you can create beautiful pages if you understand how to do page layout and design.

However, graphic design software is usually overkill for people that want to create simple e-books and reports. You can get good results with Open Office or MS Word if you know how to layout an attractive page.

I wouldn't bother with making your ebooks beautiful. The people who buy ebooks are interested in solely learning from them, not how pretty they look. If you want to use beauty to gain buyers, then make sure you get a professional ebook cover.

Actually a good looking PDF can help increase satisfaction and the perceived value of your information.

      This goes way beyond covers.

I use iWork to create my PDFs and I get lots of compliments on the designs.

People want things presented to them nicely. Otherwise the iPod would be a black box with a headphone jack.

I guess it depends on what niche your targeting.

If you're targeting women-beauty, then you will probably need it to look appealing.

Otherwise you can get creative with the free pdf software!

Just add beautiful images & have fun creating it

Others have give you good advice about using Open Office. You can make nice looking layouts for your pdf ebooks with OO. And the price is right at FREE!

However, I've become a real fan of InDesign. Included in InDesign's export options are PDF, Kindle (with Amazon's free plug-in), and ePub for Nook and others. InDesign also lets you export a PDF/X-1a:2001 if you are going to printing press. This is why I now use InDesign.

InDesign does have a little bit of a learning curve. It is not intuitive, but it does give you total freedom when it comes to adding and positioning jpegs or other images to an ebook. You can also write separate chapters if you wish, and let InDesign put them together into a book format.

If you've got an iPhone or iPad, Apples Pages comes with some very nice templates and does a good job of making plain text look nice. If you are used to using Word or Open Office you will not believe how easy this app is to use. You can email yourself a PDF directly from the app. Costs $9.99 in the app store.
