Local domain extension

Looking at some niche sites in Australia or UK, how much extra weight is given to a local domain name extension such as .com.au or co.uk to rank in Google?

Australia is expensive to registrar domains, min $38 for 2 years and a extortion fee of $258 ($220 + $38) ($280+usd) to transfer ownership.

what about putting uk or the word Australia in the domain name for a .com or .net?

Any experience?

      There won't be much point of a locally targeted domain, unless it has the correct extension. The word 'Australia' or 'UK' will not give you an advantage in local search results.

      And yes, there is huge benefit for this because local sites are given preference in many local-based searches.

    Ive heard about many problems with their hosting etc.. but for just registering a domain they should be fine.

    Yeah the link above is $12, that is true, thanks, but min of 2 years registration, and when I want to sell the site it is a $220 AUD fee and a new $12 X 2 year registration fee. I plan to flip them, it is defiantly an issue.

    The question is, just how much a com.au will help over a .com in google.com.au search?

    Oh ok, yes flipping that would be expensive.
    Well to be honest, it would help a great deal, but there really is no way for me to quantify it.
