Just a heads-up to my fellow Warriors about a scam that many of you are probably starting to hear about...

I got an email from some "advertising agency" in France saying they want to buy space on one of my sites.

Their first email they sent to me:

Evan Hubert
ehubert@gelbertagency.com
We would like to buy banner space on your site www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com.
Message Hi! My name is Evan Hubert and I represent Gelbert Agency. We are making an advertising campaign for Lacoste Company (it is a French company producing clothes, footwear, perfumery etc.) and we would like to place their banner at your site Vote Ron Paul For President – For Peace, Prosperity And The Legalization Of Freedom!. We are interested in banners of the following sizes: 160x600, 240x400, 300x250, 336x280, 468x60, 728x90. What can be your price for one banner (banner should appear at ALL pages of your site) of abovementioned sizes (please specify the place for the banner – top, bottom, left, right)? Please mention a normal link for banner, without javascript code and set prices in US dollars per month. Best regards, Evan Hubert.

The funky formatting of the email got me suspicious but I figured "what the heck" and sent them some prices and this is the second email I got from them:

Hi!

Thanks for reply to our proposal!
We like your price. We are interested in the following offer: 160x600 banner at the right side.
To pass to the banner control system follow the link http://webmaster.gelbertagency.com
To enter use the following data:

login: www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com
password: VIVLZW2

You should install and activate the plugin in order to display advertisement. Before making payment, advertiser must approve location of the banner. The banner will be shown on your site when you add special code to your web- address (for example: http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com/?adv_test=1). It means, that visitors will see the banner only if it is approved and payment made.

To get installation instruction for your site type pass to: Gelbert Agency /
To activate your site you have to enter the code: 189-FX7-ISD

What way of payment is suitable for you?

Best regards,
Evan Hubert.

It was the installation of the plugin that made me a lot more suspicious. So I googled the first sentence or two of the first email they sent me and this guy is all over the place. He will either hit you up via email like he did with me or post a comment on your blog.

Just passing this on.

Steve

Yes, I read and commented on the other thread, but it's probably a good idea to have this one too since it wasn't directly related to the other thread's topic. This person or company must be sending these e-mails to lots of people.

You didn't notice it was a foreign company that wanted to put up an American political ad? That should make enough alarms go off that they could wake the dead. Little clues are always there for the alert webmaster. Welcome to the jungle - bring your weapons and don't forget to look up when walking through the trees.
