Is it Possible to Create Stealthy Backlinks?

Ok, so I have a keyword that I think is really amazing, especially for a beginner, and I even have the EMD (.org). The thing is the top ranked page on google seems to have some stealthy backlinks.

You might be asking yourself what I'm talking about and I mean that this page's backlinks aren't found on Yahoo Site Explorer. I know this because for my particular keyword, I checked the site EMD.com and found that it's a one page site that has two links directed to the page that's #1 on google.

So how is this done? I have a theory but not sure if it's actually true. What I'm thinking is that this webmaster created another page that just redirects to the main targeted page. Would this be a commonly used tactic to use? I mean if you don't want your competitors stealing your backlinks this seems like a really good way to go about it.

Is it a high-traffic keyword? If so, what are the competing PR's for the Top 4 results below #1? Also...where are the backlinks coming from? Are they .gov or .edu sites? If so, those carry a lot more weight.

I've got a site that turned a month old today...I put 10 pages or 100% original content that I wrote on it, and I've re-posted articles as posts from Bukisa.com (complete with the author boxes to satisfy TOS) and it's already ranked PR2. (And yes, I mean PR2 not SERP #2.) I have NO clue how it did it as I don't have that many backlinks for it, but I'm very happy about it to say the least! The guy you're competing against could've just been good at his research....

If the other sites actually have lots of backlinks and the #1 EMD doesn't, then 90% chance it's loads of 301 redirected links. There is a 5% chance that is has a gazillion facebook likes and retweets (which generally don't show up in yahoo but help rankings) to boost the SERPs. The last option is that you have found a jackpot. You should hope it's #3.
