Amazon Affiliate Store Review (Boating)

I was bored and had some free time so I created an online store that is based around boating and watersports because I like the niche. I am still working on the layout and customizing. A professional logo will be added within the next day or two. Just want some feedback and if you think it is a good niche. Thanks

I do - there's lots of pricey accessories or even things that are bought in multiples (life jackets, cleaning supplies, etc.). Don't have to sell many fish finders for the commissions to start ticking up. Like that you make it clear right up front that you're partnered with Amazon - as a consumer, would make me more comfortable to buy.

How do you build the site like that - as a store? I assume those listings are autofed in from Amazon - is that part of a WordPress template or something? I've been doing review sites, but I've been focusing on written article reviews of a handful of targeted products. Doing lots of trial and error and testing, and this is similar to what I was thinking of laying out for my next site (different niche).

  • The site colors I think should be brighter, maybe blues in there instead of boring tan/brown or whatever color that is, just not very eye appealing to me. How about getting the main picture of the boat to change with the categories so i don't think I'm in the same area. I really do like how amazon feeds the products. Please tell me how this is done?

Just my 2 cents for a quick review. Good luck with it, I think you'll do well with some tweaking.

    I agree with FCS,

The tan is a little dull. Consider a color change that match's surf and water sports! I sure bet this is a good niche but might be a little late in the season for it to kick in seeing it is a seasonal niche in many areas.

Well you have lots of niches there all in one site and for sure many are pricey items in many many micro niches.

I presume this site allows you to edit the imported Amazon descriptions which you should do for each item using specific product keywords and original content, so you can try and rank for those although you will most likely need to do some other traffic methods in order to get traffic to your shopping site.

I tried a site like that and never really had any success I have been way more successful with mini micro review sites and larger review sites than shopping sites.

You might want to customize the picture to match each category instead of having a speed boat picture for each category.

    Kickin it on Amazon

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful feedback. I am currently changing the layout and colors to blues so that it is more of a water theme. I am also going to add an icon or picture for each category. So the main page will have the boat, then each category will have its own image to represent itself. Once my logo is done I think it will help pull the whole site together.

The store was made with Associate-O-Matic (AOM) and is easily done but just very time consuming to set it all up and customize. Wordpress is not required.

I think you should make your background white - the grey just looks a little clunky for me, but thats just me - I live in england - lots of things are grey here LOL!

Im really interested to hear about associate-o-matic - did you pay for it or are you using the free version??

do you need to have programming knowledge in order to customize it - or is it pretty self explanatory - ie if I wanted to make the tabs bigger, in the nav bar, or have drop down menus in the nav bar - is its just a clickable option or do you have to code it?

anyway good luck with the site, you have a ton of products on there - so I hope you do well - be great if you can update this thread to see how you are getting on :-)

    best wishes, clare :-)

Brian, I think you have a great start here. Of course, I had to check out the fishing section, right?

I noticed that the product selection on any given page looked pretty random. That could get confusing for anyone doing any serious shopping.

That said, they say the two happiest days in a boater's life are they day he gets his boat and the day he sells it. In between, it's a hole in the water into which the boater pours money. Sounds like a good market to me...

Thank you for the input about the grey. I am running the trial version which is free for 30 days, after that it is $99 for the first year which is worth it because of the features you get.

It is very simple to use but it also has a LOT of advanced options for people familiar with programming and web design. So if you want to customize the layout, drop downs, etc you need to know some programming. There isn't too much help online for customizing so you need to talk to others about it.

Thank you and the website hasn't even been up for a full month yet and I have already sold over 100 products! So it has been working out great with little advertising. If you follow the right methods, you can have some good success with AOM. Extra money is always nice

Hey, thanks for checking it out. How should I customize which products are showing for each category? What would you recommend besides random. I can target certain products for each category.

That is very true and I am a boater as well and it is actually one of my jobs (boat work) so this is very enjoyable for me.

Very good stats for one website. How are you driving traffic to the site as there aren't any reviews on the site targetting keywords as far as I can see?

Yeah it is very good stats so far. I have noticed that when your niches are really targeted, you can convert more sales. Traffic is generated through the following so far :

          - Social Media Sites
          - Forums on this niche
          - Blog commenting
          - Facebook Advertising
          - Google Search (this is my #2 source even though it is a newer site, most of my traffic is through actual search results)

I will be doing targeted banner advertising soon which will provide me with a ton of potential customers. Advertising through other websites related to this niche.

Take a look at how the big boys do it - Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, etc.

Or, since your site covers such a huge range of products, check out West Marine at westmarine.com.

If I'm looking to replace a spinning reel, for example, I don't want to wade through pages of trout flies, surf casting rods, spare parts for sonars, etc.

The easier you make it for potential buyers to find what they are looking for, the less time they have to think about where else they might find it...

Ok I will look at those websites.

Yeah on my website you don't have to do that. It just shows the best selling products of that category for the first page but you can still narrow down what you want.

Example, if you click Fishing at the top, you will see when you arrive at the Fishing section on the left sidebar you can narrow down to the next category like reels, lures, etc.

Lol it's ok. Maybe I should work on the layout and text that stands out more. If you have any other tips please let me know

For these type of sites I usually use freshstorebuilder. It has a very modern and professional design and can be SEOed very well.

BoyerBoat "Rough Draft" layout has been updated to the website. Just to start it off and update the look a little so people can see I am going in the right direction with a whole new look. The full layout will be done within a week or two.

Looks a lot better than the old layout for sure.

hey just found this thread, the site is still up, and it looks pretty good...brian - can we get an update?

    - whats your traffic like?
    - whats the main source of your traffic?
    - how many products did you sell in january (you mentioned the first month you sold 100, so very excited to hear how it's doing 4 months later)

would really appreciate an update as i'm considering doing a similar site (different niche but same kind of layout)

    thanks so much!

That's a nice looking site you have there. I have a very unique Tackle domain, but unfortunately Amazon isn't available in my state.
