Electronic Thud factor

A thud factor is the wieght of the package you get in the mail. If you ordered a course on the Banana Market, it well come come on a single DVD with video and all the manuals in PDF format, but it would get higher returns. Vendors print manuals, include bound books with transcripts of the audo, just to make the package big and daunting when opened. It appears more valuable that way.

What some people are doing, instead of making a single download with zip file, is giving the buyer a page full of links and downloads. The buyer may spend 10 minutes getting everything.

I don't know if this is done on purpose or not, but it is much like an electronic thud factor. Personally I would rather have a single zip file that unzips all the files and such into directories, but if its done for percieved value I get it.

It's done partially for that, and partially for saving bandwith...

But I mean, really... I understand it with huge videos... but with pdfs?

It's also done for those buyers with slow connection speeds - but good sellers usually include a comprehensive zip for the rest of us.

The way you provide downloads may seem unimportant - but it's a measure of the professionalism of a seller when the downloads are as easy and quick as possible.

It's another one of those little details that affects the buyer's experience - and worth doing as efficiently as possible.

You've already made the sale. Why make things more difficult for your paying customer than they need to be?

I wonder what effect that might have on refund requests? How many buyers might decide they don't want to go through all that and demand a refund?

I agree with the single ZIP file. In my opinion, if you want to impress people with a "thud factor," do it by adding valuable content, not by trying to over-complicate the download process.

I mean, a ZIP file that expands into a folder full of bonus content accomplishes that "thud" without making the buying process more burdensome to the purchaser.

If some content is so large that it's better to spread across multiple files and downloads, that's fine, but I wouldn't agree with doing so unnecessarily.

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I agree totally. Many times I've been frustrated downloading this and that when it could all have been put in one zip file.

Scott, your notion that multiple links add perceived value is intriguing. I'm with you: I'd like the single download. I hope some experienced marketers who have tested both weigh in here.

Firefox has a plugin called DownloadThemAll! that works great for a page full of downloads.
