How can I get pictures for my website?

Well, I've recently been struggling getting the right pictures for my website.
For example I recently wrote an article about the russian watches "Commander" and "Amphibia 1967". The question is how am I supposed to find such a specific picture like an image of the limited edition of watches "Amphibia 1967" ? There are plenty of those in google, but I am not sure if I am supposed to use them or not. Any thoughts, recommendations ?

I suspect that as long you are not causing damage to the brand, you are relatively safe using catalog product images, the worst case, most likely to attract the lawyers is probably unauthorized use of premium stock images.

Here are some grabbed exotic watch images

  • I would put something small below the image as a reference to the owner of the image. That should keep you safe. It's most likely that with such an obscure product, no one would notice anyway. If you use the images and some lawyers contact you, you will just have to stop using them and find new images to use. No biggie.

      Yes, it IS a "biggie."

Maybe it's an obscure product. Maybe no one would notice. Would that make any difference? SHOULD that make any difference? It certainly is not the honorable thing to do, since current copyright laws, at least in the good ole U.S. of A. forbid the jacking of images to use this way. And no, putting "something small below the image as a reference to the owner" will NOT keep you safe. Do the right thing and get permission. Or find public domain images. Or purchase them through a reputable company.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.

Sorry NaturalBornThriller but that right there is an integrity issue... Integrity counts the most when no one else is watching. It's all about doing the right thing, not what you can get away with!

    Hey Y0Y0Y0:

I think you should do google search for images. When you find one of the images you like, just ask the owner if you can have permission to use. It has worked for me countless times on Flickr.

I agree with asking for permission. You can't go wrong doing it that way.

Are the products so obscure that you can't buy it on these stock photo sites or get it free on the free photo sites?

Have you tried looking on eBay for similar items for sale? You could then contact the ebay seller - if they've sold the item they probably won't care and let you use it.

You may take a look at sxc.hu that has a lot of free loyalty pics(not sure though if it has exactly what you re asking for).On the other hand, you could always pay for some photos using image galleries like istockphoto.com

You could try iStock. I think they have millions of photos for sale that are royalty free.

I'm fairly sure that Getty Images has a 'royalty free' image search.

... I could be wrong though. My memory is a bit hazy on the issue.

getty does a massive rf collection - but they are about the most expensive images around.

I use a site called ingimage - much cheaper than istock etc. the catch being it has a smaller more edited collection.

I think you can try any of the many image websites which provide royalty free images such as Veer, Istock, Shuttlestock, and many others.

Asking permision from an image owner is good, but have you guys thought of the fact that he might actually say NO.

Then what? we are all back to square and with the same question which is where di I get the image? I think the wise thing to do is join one of the many royalty free image sites. They will charge you some little fee, but at times that will be only when you actually downlaod the image. So as long as you don't need an image you are fine.

It's a little more complicated than that sometimes.

You may be able to find the images you need in Flickr Creative Commons. The license for use vary. Some only request credit. Some don't want to be used for commercial purposes.

You can also search for royalty free images. There are several other sites that provide stock images to press etc.

Firefox has an add on "Tin eye" that helps id original owner of an image. You can then ask them for permission. Keep documentation of everything.

There is fair use policy for branded product images. However, I would still track down the name of the company/owner and phone number. Call them up and ask for permission.

You could inbed the images on your site.
So you're just hosting them but the content is technically not on your site.
when the person clicks the picture it goes to the owners site.
