Salute to a great marketer - Corey Rudl

A while ago, in the middle of an intense bout of product creation (writing), my mind went into meandering mode, trying to dodge the task at hand. You know how it is...

And before I knew it, I was wandering down memory lane idly browsing through my old backup lists. Suddenly came upon a Word doc. in which I'd saved the purchase receipt for "Insider Secrets to E-mail Marketing" - an ebook from the late Corey Rudl that was a leading guide way back in 2004.

Curious to see how it had stood the test of time, I scrolled down to the actual ebook and double-clicked, but it would not open. Windows 7 said it could not open the .ebk extension. Back to the purchase receipt and the detailed instructions that came with it - and there was mention of an Ebook Viewer that was needed to open it. Scrolled up and down through the ancient lists again to see if I'd downloaded it, and there it was!

Believe it or not, when I opened the viewer, it promptly went online, installed itself and authenticated the ebook. Then asked for username and password, which again was mentioned in my handy purchase receipt, confirmed both and opened the book to full view.

I was amazed! Imagine a program made seven years back that is still robust enough to be fully functional after so many changes of OS, and several changes of my PC/laptops. That is the way to do business, my friends, put out a superb product that is competent both technically and content-wise.

No lame excuses, no meaningless padding, no whining as to why things won't work. That is what we need to learn from great marketers.

Am going through the ebook and it is still so relevant, it's uncanny. It's so true - the basic principles never change.

That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. When corey was selling his product at $197, it was considered 'expensive' and no one dared to sell an info product at that price till he did.

Well, time flies. His product was the example of breaking pricing barriers and perceived value.

And yes, basic principles never change. After following this industry for more than a decade now, it never ceases to amaze me to see the number of people who go after tactics and the next shiny object and new seo method.

What matters in the long run is that you get the fundamentals right. All others are fluff.

Most of the people in this industry are focused on tactics and the next best thing and loose sight of the where they want to go and the big picture.

I like to think of business as a journey, a continuous one at that. You need to know where you are and where you want to go. The mode of transport can be anything, a car, bus, jet, bike etc depending on your circumstances. But without a destination and knowing where you are, there is no way to reach it.

Many people are focused on either the mode of transport or on the actual vehicle itself and loose sight of the destination and do not know where they are. And then they wonder why they are not making any money. Its sad.

I cannot agree with you in regards to software that Corey used to sell... Much of it went obsolete in a year or two or never fully functioned the way it was designed to (I bought every piece of software he sold when I got started)...

Mailloop - Good way to get shut down by your ISP
Ebook Pro - Only works on a PC
FFA Blaster - Do I really need to say it?
Desktop Marketer Pro - Name one person you know who is using it with success today?
Assoctrac - No longer on the market and the old versions would be relatively obsolete though this is one area where they did innovate and where Corey was king. He ran one heck of an affiliate program himself.

What is truly evergreen are the things he taught.

You could open up Insider Secrets to Internet Marketing v1 today and inside you would find a lot of local marketing strategies that are more powerful than most of the local marketing gurus teach. And Secrets to their success was one of the best paid newsletters of all time.

I was a big fan of Corey. A true pioneer. RIP.

I agree with Josh about the software and like he stated, the real genius behind Corey's success was his ability to understand and teach elevated marketing strategies.

My bookshelf still has Insider Secrets and there are some top notch methods that are still not being taught by anyone now.

Have to agree with you on this one. When I first started did the same thing. Mailloop is sitting on one of my computers as we speak. This **** will make you laugh. Purchase all the stuff above, but the one that is not mention was the software that harvest email addresses.

Man I jump on that sucker and stayed up all night getting email addresses. When I attempted to send them out my ISP curse me out and shut me down.

That was one of the valuable lesson learned in this business.

I LOVED that newsletter. I think it was $17 per month. It was the most useful and inspirational newsletter I ever received because what it did (for those who don't remember it), he conducted a really in-depth interview with someone who was succeeding online and that person just broke it all down and told you everything you were doing, all the tools and resources they used, gave away all their stats, told you about their mistakes, and showed you the actual website.

Nothing was held back. Is anyone else doing something like that on a regular basis? I'm not aware of it. There might be some heavy affiliates who reveal one or two of their sites, but those seem more of the cookie-cutter type and not as useful as the wide range of sites that Corey featured in that newsletter.

What really hits you when you read his ebooks is the clarity and laser-targetted focus.

He and his team released stuff that was tested, and tested again - no one-hit wonders, no guesses. Which is why it was so useful and applicable.

Another thing they did (can't remember the program now) was to pick a name and analyze their website, and show both the before and after - GREAT education in IM.

Not just tactics, but mindset - very important to remember.

I was fortunate enough to have purchased the 2nd edition of Corey's course way back in 1997 or 98 which included two 1/2 hour phone consultations with him.

His course was really the launching point that helped me take an early retirement in 2003 but the phone consultations were probably the most important part of the overall process. During the 1st 1/2 hour Corey went to my site and looked it over and asked a simple question, "what does the URL mean to anybody?"

He asked do you think anyone would be searching for that URL which basically was my last name and the abbreviation intl.com. He quickly ran off 2 or 3 suggested URL's that would be more appropriate. Shortly after the consultation, I registered both and changed the site over to one of them that is now 13 years old and my main source of income.

Corey was about 1/2 my age but possessed knowledge of the Internet that went way beyond his years and I thank him to this day for the life changing advice he provided me. His dynamic personality is sorely missed!

It all started at the IMC with me as well.

I bought the Insider Secrets course, 2007 version, and without it, I probably would not have been able to sell my own ebook. This was when Derek Gehl was running the show over there. He seemed like a smart guy, but probably not up there with Corey who I never knew.

The ebook software he used was probably Ebook Pro. It's still in use today, although no longer available for purchase.

They did eventually make it useful for Mac users by offering compiled ebooks in ZIP files for them. I used this product and Bebiz and both really helped me get things off the ground.

Never bought Mailloop as it was very expensive and unnecessary with the popularity of Aweber, IContact and others.

Corey Rudl course got me started in IM, the day he died in the car race accident I had tears in my eyes. Everything I learned about IM was from his newsletter, one of the best newsletter I subscribed to. I used to print his newsletters and read it on the way home. I am not sure if there are any great IM newsletter out there worth printing today. I purchase Insider Secret course in 2003.

    Ya man.

In fact, I kinda regretted my decision of NOT PULLING THE TRIGGER back then in 2002.
    I was just 15.

Back then, he had ranked #1 for Internet Marketing Tips
(that website is no longer there)

    Aha.

A lot of us got our first well grounded "evergreen" principle driven marketing education from him.

I bought his Insider Secrets back in 2003 as well. I still have both volumes 1 & 2 on my shelf. I used to look at them all of the time. Hard to believe it has been over 6 years since he passed.

Corey was one of the main marketers I followed when I was first getting my online business started back in 2003. His name still pops into my head quite frequently even today. I also made a lot of money promoting his products back in the day. I never talked to him personally but he seemed like a great guy from what I have read from those that did know him.

Corey was a true GIANT in the industry. Too bad we lost
him so soon. I was just out of college when I first stumbled
    on his works. Awesome stuff.

Imagine what more powerful stuff he would have brought
out if he was still alive. He's truly missed, to say the least!

Cory was a great marketer and it is a shame he died so young. However he was a great business person as well, his company is still running strong. If I died today my business would die a slow death with me.

So, that to me is saying something.

Corey's Inside Secrets was one of my first purchases too. (Hey, it's good to see a lot of warriors from 2002-5 in this thread by the way). It also was nice getting commissions that were high from his products. One other thing about him was that his affiliate program for his products was able to track when people phoned in their orders so the affiliate received credit. That was pretty impressive that he was concerned about that as many now today still plaster their 800 number on their sites without concern that an affiliate may be cheated out of their commission. He is sorely missed for his innovations as well as adventurous spirit.
