Completely lost between S3 and EasyVideoPlayer...

So I'm at the stage where I'm about doing okay online, know my conversions roughly, and am about to scale up using paid advertising. I pretty much use video for all my content and up until now have been using screencast to host those videos which for the most part has been okay, but it's a real pain when my bandwidth limit gets reached (occasionally videos buffer slowly as well).

Looking to scale up, I can't have bandwidth limits affecting me and so I just got my amazon S3 account, my cloudfront account, and my Easy Video Player account, and have landed myself in a spot where for the last four hours I've just been overwhelmed technically and have no idea what I'm doing. And so I'd really love a bit of help here (although this post is quite long so if you don't care to help, totally understandable!). Here are a few of the specifics...

1) I'm not sure where to load my videos up to? Do I stick them into my S3 account using the firefox plugin (which I have), or do I upload them to EasyVideoPlayer directly?

2) I can't seem to make my videos (in my S3 account) readable. I found a tutorial online and it said to just right-click the file once it's uploaded and "edit ACL" to make it readable, but when I click "Edit ACL", nothing happens.

3) I have distribution channels set up (one by me and one by EasyVideoPlayer) but when I try to select a file in my S3 account to be distributed through either of those channels, it tells me I have no channels set up.

4) I've just edited a video in EasyVideoPlayer and when I click to see it play, it doesn't play.

5) I've found other sites showing how good Amazon cloudfront is supposed to be, and the video they used in their post as an example doesn't really play very well either. Starting to make me wonder a couple things...

Is this Amazon stuff all it's built up to be? And what's the difference between a video that streams and a video that buffers? 'Cause I think I prefer seeing the buffer line move up so I know exactly how much has indeed become watchable, but I'd certainly like to see that line move faster (so far the fastest buffering I've seen to date is with a pro account at Kajabi, but really have no idea why).

Whew, if you made it this far, awesome and thanks. I really don't expect anyone to go out of their way for me, but if you're sitting there bored and have some input, I'd love to hear it!

Cheers,

Rob...

You can upload via evp and they take care of permissions etc. If you upload via anything else you put the stuff in the funny looking folder in your s3 a/c which is created by evp any you'll need to set the acl manually. I can pm my phone no if you are uk based and talk you through it

In you EVP dashboard>Settings>put a check in "Yes I Want to Use Amazon S3 to host my files" and then enter your S3 access key and secret key. EVP creates an S3 bucket for you and stores your uploads there. If you wish to upload files directly to S3 I would highly recommend using CloudBerry S3 Explorer - FREE Not only a great interface for managing your buckets and files but right clicking gives you easy access to your ACL Settings for buckets, folders or files.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll give both of those ideas a try. But have you guys noticed a significant difference in playabitility? 'Cause I'm trying to watch my videos in their newly "sped-up" format and they always stop playing in the first 30 seconds. Right now, screencast is seeming WAY better, but this is very contrary to almost ALL the opinions out there.

      Hi,

I'm only using S3 to host my files without enabling Cloudfront service. And the streaming and file downloads are quite amazing despite being in East Asia.

One thing to note is that the main bucket name should all be in lower caps. Otherwise you won't be able to stream or download.

Cloudberry is a good tool to manage your files in S3. With S3Fox, enable Private Browsing on your FireFox to see if it pops up the ACL when right-clicking.

I'm using the free Hana Player embedded in my posts. I can provide you a user id in my web site if you wish to test the streaming speed at your end. Just PM me.

PS : I envy you for having EVP. Hope to get my hands on it soon.

    Awesome, thanks for that, Azmanar!

About the main bucket name...are numbers and dashes okay? 'Cause that seems to be the only thing other that lower case letters existing.

    Thanks again!

Cool, thanks. So just to double check, I can simply host my videos with S3 and then use Easy Video Player to play them, more or less as I do with Screencast?

      yes it's true

evp is pretty straightforward, just enter the s3 details and your done...
but the best tip I have is watch Josh's video on encoding inside the site.. he shows step by step the settings to compress your video using handbrake..
this reduces file sizes a lot and makes them play smooth and on all devices without too much loss of quality.

Hey Josh, cheers. Unfortunately (another one of my little frustrations adding up as I went through) handbrake doesn't support older versions of Mac anymore so I'm not sure what to do about that. Any suggestions?

    @Azmanar,

Sorry, apparently I can't reply to a PM either until I have 50 posts. But just to let you know, I was unable to view that video, even after logging in. Not sure why, just looked like a bunch of weird code pasted over top of where it should've been.

Either way, thanks for your help (everyone),

    Rob....
